Swansea v Bournemouth (Carabao Cup Round Two) Tuesday 29 Aug 19:45

Premier League Bournemouth are the visitors on Tuesday night as the top clubs enter the competition.

They are presently starting their second season back in the PL. Gary O’Neil took over from Scott Parker last August only four games in after a 9-0 defeat at Anfield. He oversaw a season of consolidation in the PL and guided them to a respectable 15th place, 5 points clear of relegation. He was replaced in June 2023 by former Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola. He comes with a reputation of a high-intensity, attack-minded style of play, so in theory it should be an entertaining game.

This season they are winless in their first three games -

Bournemouth 0 - Spurs 2

Liverpool 3 - Bournemouth 1

Bournemouth 1 - West Ham 1

We welcome Welsh Internationals David Brooks, Chris Mepham and Kieffer Moore. There’s also an ex-Swan there, 29 year-old winger Jamal Lowe, but he is seemingly out of favour and tipped to leave before the transfer window closes. He scored 14 goals for us in the season before he moved to Bournemouth, could he shine again for us, we are short of fire-power.

Never mind up front though, our defence has conceded 7 goals in 4 games so far and needs sorting out as a priority in this last week of the transfer window.

The proverbial game of two half’s. We played well first half and deserved to go in at the break with the lead.
Second half Bournemouth were a transformed team with the introduction of subs Dominic Solanke, Lewis Cook and Milos Kerkez and it changed the game.
Suddenly we were on the back foot and looked very vulnerable, especially on the flanks. It was inevitable that they scored. Brooks was unmarked on our left for their equaliser on 55’, and it was backs to the wall as we thwarted wave after wave of attack. Solanke hit the post and Traore slotted home to make it 1-2 on 68’.
Sub Paterson was only on ten minutes before equalising on 79’ for the Swans.
Sub Christie fired home in the first minute of injury time for the Cherries to settle the tie, just when we were thinking about a penalty shoot out.
Bournemouth showed second half how big a gulf in class there is between the PL and the Championship.
We looked good in parts but our defending let us down again and needs a lot of work.
Wood was on the subs bench but never used, looks as if he’s off in the next few days
