Social Media N/G

Whatever way we look at it , the situation is going to be changing within hours.
Donald Trump will be signing an Executive Order 'pertaining to social media' , after Twitter fact-checked his tweet.

He has repeatedly complained that Conservative opinions/voices are being censored/deplatformed , and has issued warnings in the past.

We can all agree that politics haven't been friendly over the past few years , but this could turn very nasty.

With a November election and Brexit at the end of the year, the next 7 months are going to be interesting if nothing else.

I Iike social media. Its enabled me to keep in touch with friends who live far away and also those closer by but affected by lockdown.

It has made me laugh out loud at times.

This board is social media and it's nice to chat about gills and other random stuff with strangers, yet people you feel something in common with.

It can also be a vessel for hate for people spreading unfounded information and it is the most effective tool for bullying.

Overall I like it but the people using it should exert some control over the hatred they broadcast

I agree Mark

However as we have seen on our group one persons profound belief is another persons definition of hatred.

For every Trump there will be another person suggesting the opposite...... so who defines the control ?

Fact checking is what's needed.

If anyone in a position of power tweets anything that is simply false, it should be fact checked so that the electorate can know the truth and make better decisions.

Most hatred comes from ignorance after all.

Like many things, it is great if you are well adjusted and do not take any of its contents, even abuse, too seriously.

Not so great for the vulnerable, those on the autistic spectrum or those with mental health issues.

I could also see it being the modern vessel for brainwashing and even cults (spelt correctly, before you ask).

Fact checking is what's needed.

Problem there is to find sources you can rely on to be sure that something is an indisputable fact.

In the past, I have completely trusted anything reported on the BBC but some posters on here question their honesty and impartiality.

There have been numerous examples in history of whole nations being brainwashed to believe what they think are facts but are really propaganda.

It's really not hard when you can apply critical thinking to the article/question.

The biggest win that the far right and populists have had over the last 5 years is them causing distrust of the traditional media amongst their base, calling it fake news etc, when they were the ones spewing fake news, which then leads to mass distrust of all media, which can then lead to demagogues coming to power.

One person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter.

Opinions are not facts. But what is politics if not an expression and exchange of opinions?

Should Cummins be sacked? That is a matter of opinion. Did he break the lockdown rules? Again, largely a matter of interpretation.

People in power have their own opinions as we all have. Can they not express those?

People tend to select the facts that support their own arguments after all.

The social media companies have escaped legal action by claiming they are simply a platform , and not responsible for their users content. I expect Trump wants to change all that , and bring in laws that make them liable as a publisher would be.

Only because they dared to have a go at his musings - a twat with thin skin [fact checked]

If they're made liable for users' content that will lead to more censorship and fact checking surely.

Fact checking lol.
So someone is hired to counter someone else's opinion. Do we then have another fact checker to check that fact checkers ‘facts’.

Who are these self appointed people to tell us what is or is not a fact or even worse to ban people whos ‘opinion’ you don't like. Why start with the president? Really though people need to look at this aside from Trump.

Trumps stand is hilarious. He has like other politicians used the freedoms of social media to get where he is and many of his opinions could also be called fake news and unfounded claims. Twitter doing the same thing suddenly upsets him. When they were banning people where was he?

Yes social media needs regulating but it always has done. People only cry foul when its ‘their side’ under fire.
The biggest problem with todays capitalism is that it has just become corporatist socialism and the basic competition had been allowed to move to monopolies.
Why is google allowed to have an operating system, browser, shopping, social media and communications under one body, why has it not been split up? Why is Amazon allowed to move towards being a monopoly which is also damaging the retail sector and financial institutions.
These companies are now moving to be monopolies of your data and trace your (most peoples) every move and shopping habit fed back to the governments.
They interfere in elections as they filter the adverts and sell peoples data to activists.

Any of the above been looked into by trump etc - no, in fact they have been actively blocking investigation.

Do we really have to choose between trumps facts and the social media facts. Maybe we have given up on free speech!
Today its trumps speech that is being questioned - tomorrow it could be any of us.

There's been quite a lot of fuss about that over here - the government started to crack down on fake news, hoaxes, rumours, etc. but then, if their opponents are to be believed, started using that as an excuse to then just try to silence anyone that tried to criticise them.

I always thought that state control and interference of all media types was the territory of frightened communist leaders. Seems the capitalist west is becoming more touchy about criticism now. Odd because they want to harvest all our data and use it to control our opinions and decisions which is exactly what the communist powers want too.
Our own government has regularly flooded the internet with billions of 'bot' tweets and Facebook influences playing to our preferences and trying to pull the population in a particular direction. Coincidently, it is one of the most brilliant skills of that chap our prime minister has so desperately defended over recent days.

Agreed.
Before SM , govts could rely on broadcast media and the press , to make sure the 'right type' of news was presented.
SM has totally knackered those who relied on suppression of knowledge.
The genie won't be returning to the bottle.

I wouldn’t agree with ‘totally knackered’ but the landscape has been changed immeasurably by SM.

Suppression of knowledge is still very much a thing along with its friends Fake News and information overload.
We also have the issue of SM helping put a lot of people within echo chambers so that their views are constantly reinforced by likeminded individuals - alternative views then seem alien and unbelievable.
Thanks the lord this site is holding up the anti-echo chamber front.
