At the risk of coming across all elitist, why did we need to play this game to get to the final.

All teams (nations) apart from the host country have to take part in a qualifying competition to narrow the number of entrants down to 24 in the finals:

I guess I’m all tuckered out with so much footy this last year. How must the players feel?

At the risk of coming across all elitist, why did we need to play this game to get to the final. As with any sport, and I’m thinking about cricket here, there can be too much of a good thing. I never thought I would say this, but I find it hard to get enthusiastic about a game like this.

Think of it as the "magic of the European Championships", all the minnows need their shot at glory before the big boys get on with the real deal.
