Rate The Players v Northampton Town

Vital Football Legend
A different Northampton to the one we played in December, not a great performance, but three points is three points and we move on. McGrandles has his first goal for the club and Scully has his tenth of the season. Portsmouth's six clean sheets in a row has been blown away, sincere thanks to Hull for softening them up for us. Tuesday night sees us reach the midpoint of the season, and we can be no lower than third. How many of us would have believed that four months ago?

6.0 is the par score, use half-marks and give us your comments too.

Deadline is 5pm on Monday.

Palmer 6 Didn't have a lot to do despite Northampton bombarding us. A couple of dodgy clearances as well (we'll put it down to the pitch)

Eyoma 8 Terrific match at both ends of the pitch. Was instrumental in our best plays today. My MOM
Jackson 7 Stood up well to the long ball tactic
Walsh 7 As per Jackson
Edun 7 Decent hardworking performance. Still positionally suspect at times

Bridcutt 7 More good than bad. Some excellent tackles, some dodgy ones which could cost us on other occasions
Grant 6 Seemed a little subdued today. Not much came off
Johnson 6.5 Better when moved out wide but no huge contribution

Scully 7 Hard working and took his goal well
Rogers 6 Bit peripheral and struggled to get involved. Some flashes of promise

Hopper 7 Excellent pressing for our second goal. Intelligent pass to Scully. Worked hard throughout

McGrandles 7.5 His introduction made us a more solid unit which caused them more problems. Good finish for his first goal for the club

Palmer 6 - distribution not as good on a tricky pitch
Eyoma 8 - some great crosses and defended well
Jackson 7 - didn't put a foot wrong
Walsh 7 - should have scored but defended well
Edun 8.5 - best performance I can remember from him. Great assist.
Bridcutt 7 - Better performance from him.
Grant 7 - Even in his quieter games he oozes class.
Johnson 6.5 - looked better on the wing.
Scully 6 - Pretty anonymous until the goal.
Rogers 6 - Some good moments but largely anonymous.
Hopper 6.5 - great assist. Didn't provide enough of an outlet in the first half.

McGrandles 7 - great impact.

Palmer: 6 Well protected by his defence, had nothing to save until stoppage time. Can only be a par score for the coldest goalkeeper in football.
Eyoma: 8 Thought he was terrific, especially going forward. One lovely touch on the edge of the Northampton box.
Jackson: 7 Got his head to everything to prevent the Northampton giants winning set pieces; did Northampton win anything in our box?
Walsh: 7 Ditto Jackson, and could have scored.
Edun: 8 Two very good attacking performances from the full-backs.
Bridcutt: 7 Felt he was on the edge of conceding a penalty or being sent off, but that's his game.
Grant: 6 Quiet game in terms of influence, nothing really came off for him.
Johnson: 6 Needs Jones or McGrandles to play him in.
Scully: 6.5 Not as effective today, but he has scored in four of the last five league games and has 10 for the season. Will he reach 20?
Rogers: 6 Realistically all we could expect from him on full debut, possibly a striker first and foremost?
Hopper: 6.5 Another one who seems to play better with Jones and/or McGrandles behind him. Good assist.

McGrandles: 7.5 Much more solid with him slotting into the space between Bridcutt and Hopper, and he has his first goal. Good to have him back.

Palmer 6 - bid for player of the season once again sabotaged by having little to do, the defenders in front of him being highly competent, the bastards.
Eyoma 7.5 - continues to improve his attacking game, a terrific performance
Jackson 7.5 - he and Walsh dominated a physical attack in the air and on the ground. 50 yard pass to Hopper a match highlight.
Walsh 7.5 - as per Jackson, they dealt with every set piece. His cameo was nearly scoring in the first half.
Edun 8 - defensive game continues to improve, significant in attack with assist for first goal and some great passes and link up play. Fizzing with energy, twice in potential scoring positions on the end of quick breaks and a short cameo on the right wing.
Bridcutt 7.5- his primary role to win the ball and break up play leads to some fouls but some superb tackling and passing as well.
Grant 7 - not his best day but still a key player.
Johnson 7 - looked better when moved out to the left wing but worked hard while in the middle three
Scully 7.5 - worked his socks off again, those dangerous curling balls in from the right becoming a trademark, as is his ability to snaffle a goal.
Rogers 5 - struggled to have any impact but he'll be better for this experience.
Hopper 7.5 - showed what we missed, great hold up play, worked the defence and great vision to lay off to Scully to score.

McGrandles 7.5 - also showed what we've missed, a clever, dynamic midfield player and a nicely taken first Imps goal.

Palmer 6. Handled crosses well, not a lot else to do.
Eyoma 7. Had a lot of the ball going forward and used it well, solid in defence
Jackson. 7.
Walsh. 7. As a duo they were very solid, won a lot of ariel challenges and coped well as it was a new combination.
Edun 8. MoM Duracell performance and involved in a lot of good play as usual but defensively was solid, won most of his challenges and great assist for the viral opening goal.
Bridcutt. 7. Broke up a lot of their play and vital game winning last ditch tackle.
Grant. 6. Released to play with more freedom once McGrandles came on, was ok but not the usual commanding influence.
Johnson 5.5. Flattered to deceive and nothing eye catching today
Scully 6. Similar to Johnson but on a rich scoring run and slotted home confidently.
Hopper. 7. Typical Hopper game, working hard and effective for the team winning good defensive headers too and then great intelligent play to provide an assist for Scully
Rogers 5. First game for a young lad and sure there is better to come but today looked way below expected standard. Lost possession by not seeing a pass and running into blind alleys. Will need to show much more to be worth a starting position but early days for him. Would be surprised if he starts in the next 2 games this week.

McGrandles. 7. Much better shape to the team because it released Grant to play forward a bit more so we pegged then back and he slotted his first goal.

Tough game. Northampton pressed us very strongly first half, though they didn’t threaten greatly. Bags of character and we stuck with it and got our reward. Shame about the late goal but it was a worldy.
Palmer - 6.5 - didn’t have a great deal to do but did it well. Bit hesitant in the first half, which was unusual for him. Could do nothing about the goal.
Eyoma - 8 - solid defensively and kept driving down the right to keep the pressure on them and tried all sorts of ways to open them up.
Jackson - 7 - solid, consistent and did what he had to do without fanfare.
Walsh - 7 - same as Jackson.
Edun - 9 - okay, I was wrong early season. Developing into a superb player and covered every inch of the pitch. MoM 👏
Bridcutt - 7.5 - great leader and we do miss him when he’s not playing, but I do worry about some of his tackles and the FKs he gives away around the box. We’ll get punished for some of them by some good FK experts.
Grant - 6 - a very average game by his standards I thought. Just seemed to be a little out of sorts with his dead ball moves and his tackling was a little mistimed. Is he not well or has the last couple of weeks without a game knocked the edge off him 🤔. Need him back firing for Tuesday.
Johnson - 6.5 - took a while to get going but did better second half.
Scully - 7.5 - worked hard and scored an important goal. Halfway through the season and he’s hit double figures - could be our top scorer by the end of the season 🤔
Rogers. - 5.5 - looked a little lost or Just didn’t involve himself as much as he should. Early days. Perhaps he’s still getting fit and adjusting to the more physical weekly punishment of lower league football. He’s got talent and I’m sure MA will bring it out of him.
Hopper - 7.5 - led the line superbly and the usual Hopper performance. Love his awareness of the positions around him and offsides, etc.

McGrandles - 7.5 - great to have him back. He really makes a difference to the midfield. Very happy that he scored his first goal for the Imps.

Palmer.7. Solid as ever with the exception of the rare miskick..
Eyoma.7.5. Excellent engine. Almost like a winger at times.
Jackson. 7. Dealt with the bombardment well.
Walsh. 7. As with Jackson. Should have scored in the first half.
Edun. 8. He was everywhere and he retained possession well whilst still taking risks in the right areas.
Bridcutt. 7. Walks a tightrope doesn't he? One day soon he will be sent off. Lucky not to give the penalty away, but many good things to his game. Looking forward to seeing him against the big boys, coming up.
Grant.6. Flicks and tricks did not quite click.
Johnson. 6. Plenty of endeavour but part of an underperforming attacking combination.
Scully. 6. Took his goal well but under par for him , compared to recent performances. Ran into a few blind alleys.
Hopper. 7 . The stand out attacker and so unselfish.
Rogers. 5. Understandably off the pace. We need to bed him in carefully to unleash his potential.
Mcgrandles. 7. Made a significant difference. The workhorse we were missing for too much of the game.
Man of the Match. Tayo Edun.
