Rate The Players v Fleetwood Town

Vital Football Legend
Well, last night showed us that we are no longer the walking wounded, we are barely walking anymore. So many players so far off the pace, Fleetwood closed us down constantly, yet had acres of space when on the ball themselves. Hurried passes galore, misplaced and bringing constant pressure. We are not really off-form, our few remaining players are knackered. On the positive side, the missing players will give us a great boost for the end of the season, provided they return in time. There are nine and a half weeks of the season remaining, that is all, so those players will need to hit the ground running if the automatic promotion challenge is to continue. A further positive is that we should be relatively fresh if the play-offs are reached. The other sides will catch up very soon in terms of fatigue - watch this space with interest, there are many twists and turns remaining.

Palmer: 7 A couple of decent saves, no chance with the goals, fortunately showed no signs of any hangover from poor recent performances. Great pass to Morton for the goal, earning a bonus mark for intelligence and execution.
Poole: 5.5 Fine for the first forty minutes but seemed to struggle a bit after that. Should have scored with the header, the game might have been different.
Jackson: 7 If he was playing with an injury, it didn’t show; one superb headed interception in the first half.
Montsma: 5.5 The defence is being increasingly exposed by some poor performances in midfield, and Montsma in particular is affected by the absence of Bridcutt.
Edun: 4 I still believe he is being targeted by opponents – Swindon, Plymouth and Fleetwood all attacked noticeably down our left – and he struggled again last night against Burns. And I don’t think I have ever seen so many mishit passes by one player. He is a clever player in midfield, but is he playing too deep to make those passes count?
Jones: 4.5 Off the pace, while his dead balls were generally disappointing. Still suffering from the Covid bout?
McGrandles: 6 Tried to influence the game, but he was not well-supported by his midfield colleagues. Should have closed Garner down better?
Johnson: 5.5 Slightly sub-par, a few flashes of skill as usual. One goal in fifteen and hasn’t scored a league goal for twelve games.
Rogers: 5 Looked very lethargic – was he injured? Never generated any pace or rhythm.
Scully: 5.5 Ditto, one very good effort in the first half but not much else.
Hopper: 5 Nothing of any real note, barely noticed him tonight. The forwards and attacking midfielders created very little between them.

Morton: 7.5 Great comeback, looked dangerous and noticeably quicker than anyone else in a red shirt. The only real positive to come from last night.
Bramall: 6.5 Helped to turn the momentum in our favour, much better attacking than defending.
Eyoma: 6.5 Ditto, we look better with him in the side. We need him fully fit again, he must not be left out simply because he won’t be here next season.
Sanders: 6.5 His best performance so far, albeit a cameo. Tried to initiate attacking moves à la Grant.

Palmer 7: Kept us in it in the first half with three saves and almost rescued a point with his late header. Thankfully no sloppy errors on this occasion.
Poole 6: Started well and almost headed us in front but then faded as the game wore on. Could be a useful player for us in the future.
Jackson 7: Two terrific goal-saving interventions and generally pretty good.
Montsma 7: Had a bit of a ding dong battle with Vassell and generally came out on the right side. Better than he has been of late.
Edun 4: A super player in the making, but gives away possession far too easily and far too often. Did he make any successful passes last night? Dreadful.
Jones 5: Where has the Jones from early season gone? Started with purpose but went missing for long periods. Just cannot stamp his authority on a match nowadays.
McGrandles 5.5: Battled hard but not much came off and how many times did he misjudge headers? Guilty like several others of gifting possession to Fleetwood numerous times. Backing out of tackles too.
Johnson 5: Started brightly in the first half but we were overrun in midfield and he isn’t the type to battle and get stuck in. A luxury we cannot afford in midfield.
Rogers 5: Looks superb at times, with how he glides away from opponents and the way he uses the ball, but too casual too often and looked like he was playing in a training match the way he was just waltzing round the pitch. Two luxuries in a side with Johnson.
Scully 4: Not a wideman and it showed big time last night. Chased and harried but never got near the ball at times and just was never on it, although superb curling effort nearly opened the scoring. That is where he needs to be, nearer the goal. No pace and very little technical skills, but he’s a goal poacher.
Hopper 6: Another hard working performance but it was hard for him up top on his own and his standards slipped a little.

Morton 7: Brilliant to see him back and he injected life into the side. Well taken goal a portent of things to come? We need him to be starting games and quick.
Bramall 5.5: Still not convinced by him.
Eyoma 6: Did okay and offered more poise than Poole.
Sanders 6.5: Thought he was not going to get on and the way he played in those last 15-20mins makes you wonder why he wasn’t brought on earlier. Another promising outing, albeit a cameo.

Another frustrating game. Once again the midfield and defence failed to stop two well taken goals and left us with too much to do, notwithstanding the usual excellent fight-back - well, up to a point.

Palmer - 7 - back to his usual dominant self. Made two or three decent saves. Don’t think he could do much about the goals. Excellent pass to set up Morton for the goal.
Poole - 6.5 - thought he had a good game, and almost scored (he’ll get one soon). He’ll only get better with a full pre-season.
Montsma - 5.5 - interesting physical battle with Vassell - still missing something I can’t put my finger on (post-Covid 🤔)
Jackson - 7.5 - MoM - consistent and solid at the back again.
Edun - 4.5 - started well enough but so many passes went astray most of the game, and allowed his opponent to get the wrong side of him three or four times. Think he is missing Grant more than most with their tremendous understanding and inter-play.
Jones - 5.5 - still not quite on song.
McGrandles - 7 - worked really hard and tried to take on the mantle of chief playmaker but not all quite came off.
Johnson - 6.5 - thought he worked really hard and with some skill at times. Rogers could learn a bit from him.
Rogers - 4.5 - clearly a star in the making but he wants the ball to feet all the time, won’t chase down the ball or challenge hard for it and needs to learn when to release the ball Instead of trying to get through three opponents - a slipped pass could take three out of the game if he was less selfish. A pell on the bench - unless Man C dictate that he plays all the time 🤫
Scully - 6 - terrier, but less effective than usual.
Hopper - 7 - worked hard for the team again.

Morton - 7 - brilliant contribution for one who’s been out for so long. Beautifully taken goal and understanding with Palmer for the early ball, and made two or three excellent runs with control. Looking forward to seeing more of him.
Bramall - 6 - shows promise going forward but needs to improve defending. Another who will benefit from a good pre-season.
Eyoma - 6 - decent contribution but still not quite back to his best (Covid?)
Sanders - 6.5 - some promising touches. Be great to see some more of him. Another who will benefit from a full pre-season.

Palmer 7 Back to something like his best after a couple of recent dodgy matches. Some good saves and the assist for our goal was exceptional quick thinking

Poole 6 Pretty solid at the back but doesn't have the attacking intent of TJ

Jackson 7 Seemed unaffected by his injury and had a decent game

Montsma 6 Pretty solid throughout

Edun 4 Was back to the trying too hard Tayo of earlier in the season. Far too many rushed passes which went astray and straying from position

McGrandles 7 My MOM. You could see the effort he was making to get us going and played well in all areas of the pitch

Jones 5.5 Started well playing with energy but faded so quickly after half time and played two of the worst passes of the season just before being taken off

Johnson 6.5 Some energy and good play early on. It's not quite clicking though and that frustration is showing on him

Scully 5 Sometimes you just have one of those games. That first or second minute pass back from the attacking half which nearly conceded a corner was a sign of what was to come, and it just didn't happen for him.

Rogers 5 A frustrating night for Morgan as shown by him lashing the ball into the advertising towards the end. Still learning how to play at this level. Some runs took out two defenders brilliantly, but then he couldn't decide how to make the most of it. It's a lot to expect a young player with huge potential to make the jump from youth teams.

Hopper 5 Barely had a sniff all match

Eyoma 6 Decent enough in his half hour
Bramall 5.5 Jury is still out on Cohan. Big leap in quality from L2 to playing at the top of L1 and with matches coming thick and fast it's difficult to adjust
Sanders 6.5 Showed glimpses of skill and energy. I do like that he usually looks forward rather than back to make a pass
Morton 7 Great to see him back and that finish was great. Probably the big plus of last nights game

Agree with your marking Perthimp, I do not think it works with Johnson and Rodgers on the field together, seem to get in each others way, and looking to be our saviours with greed for the ball, lack alot of vision. I like Johnson on the left , so much more effective for us especially now we have Morton back, so those 2 along with Scully and Hopper, whichever trio plays can do well for us.I think Edun or Sanders can probably do as good in MF for George's position, useing Bramall LB with Edun beside him, the rest of back line with Eyoma and Jackson back in is ideal,Montsma has to improve.

please don't mind my comments, its just as I see it.

come on boys stay positive everybody.

Palmer. 7. Ok.
Poole 5 Started well, missed a great chance with the free header from 6 yards and went downhill from there. Stood and watched out of position for their 2nd goal
Jackson 7. Our best defender on the night
Montsma. 6 Better passing than of late but turned too easy when marking one on one.
Edun. 4. One of my favoured players but had a real stinker. Caught out of position, giving the ball away continuously, a game to forget.
Jones. 5. Started ok full of energy but faded and looked low on confidence
McGrandles 6. Average score for Connor and that’s his worst game for 2 months
Johnson 5. Flattered to deceive again, gets you on the edge of your seat then ......nothing
Scully 4. Again one of my favoured players but apart from one smart effort he
played as though he was a fan who had won the raffle to be a player for a day. Mis hit passes, poor control and lack of pressing. Not a good game.
Hopper. 4.5. Won a few free kicks but nothing else. Hardly led by example as a skipper.
Rogers. 4. Was it lack of effort, desire and team play or was it a really bad night. Worst game of his City career, needs a good kick up the arse.

Morton. 7. Couldn’t have asked or hoped for more on his return. Pulled their defence about more on his own than the others did for the first hour.
Eyoma. 6. Ok
Brammall. 5. Never looks composed and in control. I always fear when any player is described first and foremost as pacy or rapid. It usually means lacks ball control and technique, so far this is the case with Brammall.
Sanders. 6.5. Looked ok, happy to take the ball in tight spots and usually kept possession with tidy passing to create a bit of tempo to our play.

Palmer 7 best game for some weeks, some good saves, good distribution. Great vision and execution to find Morton and nearly injury time hero!
Poole 6 didnt really connect with Scully but some good runs forward and last chipped cross to Hopper caused problems. Should have got free header on target.
Jackson 7 held defence together.
Montsma 6 best post covid game but still short of his best.
Edun 5 one of those nights he's still too prone too. Exposed against a pacy wing back with little defensive support.
Jones 6 as Montsma. Started well but faded in 2nd half.
McGrandles 7 most energetic of midfield, good all round game and my MoTM
Johnson 6 showed again not really good enough for midfield, but some moments getting forward.
Rogers 4 needs a rest. Talented, but poor decision making, no end product.
Scully 5 one of those nights for him too, though great long range effort in first half
Hopper 6.5 kept plugging away.

Morton 7 announced his return with a superbly taken goal, can be a key player if keeps fitness.
Bramall 5 still not always on same wavelength but better than previous outings.
Eyoma 6 still not firing on all cylinders
Sanders 7 composed and capable - good enough to start if fir enough.
