Promotion Favourites v Relegation Favourites ( allegedly)

Some There were some very biased decisions from the ref in favour of Derby.

Additionally awful when the Derby winger crossed the ball when it was well over the line

Yep there was some dodgy decisions by the ref & liner but isn't it funny we don't mention them when we win.....the 9 mins of injury time plus another 2 mins on top of that we're very strange, good job they didn't score. Would be interesting to see what the injury times were at other games if this is a new 'rule' by efl to add on so called time wasting????

Fantastic result and probably a good time to play Derby away. Later in season may have been so much harder. A great confidence builder. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
corect. just like when we pleyed blackpool on the 1st game when they came up to the prem. they thumped us.

can i be one of the furst to welcome MiW back to. cant wate to tell him his opinions are sheit. that he waches differnent games to me. that his forcasting is alweys rong. and that hes no clue about managers. 😉

welcome back mate.

Fantastic, well earned result. It wasn't a glittering sexy performance but it was still a very pleasing one where we showed a great deal of composure on the ball in defence combined with a lot of fight and graft.

In the first half we seemed a little uncertain of our new style but showed a couple of flashes of lovely pass and move. But we were being pressed high and hard and i think we ended up getting a bit nervous and opted to go long a few times when maybe we didn't need to that just lost the ball. But Derby were not at their best, misplacing passes quite regularly and it seemed we slowly got more confidence to play out. We started with Clare as an inverted full backs but Pearce playing more as a traditional full back, but as the game went on Clare seemed to become more traditional too and I think that worked better.

Both sides had posession and spells of pressure without creating clear cut chances. We were defending resolutely but we were at times open down either flank on the counter and we did give the ball away in dangerous areas a couple of times. So I'd say Derby were not really getting at us except when we made mistakes to let them in. Derby were arguably slightly on top when a terrible mistake from Bradley trying to pass back to the keeper under pressure from Wyke put him through on goal. Wyke had a chance like that against Tranmere and tried to chip the onrushing keeper and missed badly, so I imagine that was on his mind and he kept his composure to round their keeper and slot it away despite the defenders rushing back on the line.

I think we were probably just about worth our half time lead and had turned in a solid first half performance. It was probably short on real attacking flair but the team was working hard and making life tough for Derby.

After half time Derby came on strong but we seemed to have grown in our own confidence and were better playing the ball out under pressure. But we found that as well of the defenders got the ball out it was often lost by the attackers or they were eventually forced to into going long and giving it away as the attacking players weren't giving them options.

Derby pushed harder and we ended up deeper, with our lack of defensive or physicality in midfield started to show. We continued to defend well but we completely lost midfield and the ball just kept coming back at us with Derby having too much time and space on the flanks to get deep crosses in. Derby started to create good chances that we were lucky to survive but eventually got an equaliser through a deflected cross hit a Derby head and could've gone anywhere - But unfortunately landed perfectly into the path of the onrushing full back. We forgot to track him and he was completely unmarked to fire home. It felt like it was coming and we should've made some tactical changes earlier to try and avoid it. But it was very frustrating that after so much hard work a massive lapse of concentration or lack of defensive discipline allowed them a free hit at equalising - it was avoidable and self inflicted.

After the goal you feared momentum was going to be with Derby and our heads would drop setting them up for a winner. But while Derby remained on top we adjusted midfield taking off the tired McManaman for Adeeko and pushing Thelo onto the left and started to regain midfield a bit and push up the field more.

A bit of good work from Aasgaard in his more advanced role set up Pearce to deliver a dangerous cross that the Derby keeper completely lost the flight of and Wyke was in the right place to nod home a second goal against the run of play.

After that we smartly adjusted tactics again brining on Watts to move to a back 3 to deal with the expected big final push from Derby. It was all hands on deck as we were under constant pressure and everyone battled to keep them out but we were also very smart with the ball and not panicking into clearing our lines unnecessarily to give them the ball back easily. We tried to intelligently keep posession to break up their momentum, take the pressure off ourselves and give us a breather by frustrating them into chasing us and denying them the ball to launch more attacks.

The referee added 9 minutes of added time that was very excessive even with the daft new EFL rules. But we stuck to our task and even survived the ref adding another 3 mins on top of his initial overly generous adage. It felt like the ref was playing until Derby scored! But we resolutely saw it out and sealed a big win that wasn't the prettiest but showed that even though we want to play nice football we can do the ugly side of the game too.

Coming into this game it was hard to know what to expect from us as we are still very much a work in progress finding our feet. But while we failed to produce the sexy attacking moves we saw in the first half against Everton, the defensive unit was excellent both in posession and dealing with the threat and you can't understate how transformative the ability to play out from the back under pressure made today. The attacking end of the pitch was a bit disjointed and struggled to really create much but and i dont think we've worked out the right personnel there just yet but hopefully that will evolve over the coming weeks. But everyone worked hard and showed great heart to hold onto the lead, by the end everyone was dead on their feet but they dug deep to keep battling and drag themselves over the line. A really pleasing performance and after what Maloney, the players and fans have endured over the past 6 months or so it was thoroughly deserved.

Not often I disagree with your excellent match summary, but I thought you were a tad hard on the lads. For a first game with a completely new team against the title favourites away from home, I thought it was an outstanding performance and the football we played was light years ahead of Leams tactics. If yesterday was a taste of things to come bring it on.

Watching the highlights, it does seem like all of Derby's big chances came from our right hand side, their left wing back was causing havoc. An area for recruitment I think, another right back/wing back, although I wonder if Kerr could play in that position in a back four.

Assuming he's sticking around, I suspect Maloney is waiting for him to get fit before he starts playing a back three.

I think Humphrys was guilty of not tracking back. Kerr I don't think would be suited to full back.

I agree it was an outstanding performance all things considered and the football was drastically better. But it was more of a battling performance with us enduring pressure for large parts of the game rather than us playing them off the park.

Nothing wrong with that - you need to be able to do both and against the league favourites with our new team it was exactly what we needed to do.

But I agree with Maloney's post match saying there was stuff we can and will improve on as the team settles in.

We was 19/1 for promotion less than a month ago....I put a wee £5 on us to win today at odds of 4.5/1....
We'll do very well if we can play like that most weeks.
I got a free £5 bet through Skybet and stuck it on you at 4-1. I'm £20 better off thanks to that result.

I'll be putting bets on you to win most weeks, so take comfort that when you win, I win too!

I also noticed MiW is back. Glad to see it

Had completely written today's game off, pleasantly surprised is an understatement.

I get the feeling we're going to be one of those horrible unpredictable teams this season. We've got a top half starting XI and a bottom half second XI. So we'll cause problems for the top teams some days and get rolled over by the relegation fighters others.

Young Tickle proved his worth today, he could be a real gem.
Never write any game off Gaz-man. This is the Tics after all. We defy the odds. It's in our DNA!

A very decent and for me an unexpected result. A reasonably sized ground and crowd which will have been a new experience for some of the team. Difficult to assess after one game but we showed a range of positive attributes including resilience to see the game out. That bodes well for the future. How long we can keep a key component of that in Hughes remains to be seen.

I fully recognise the necessity to reduce both the wage bill and bring down player age. However a little experience in there is also vital, which is why the loss of McLean (who took the honourable way out compared to some of the others) will be felt heavily both on and off the pitch. Hopefully we can recruit someone of his ilk to fill the leadership/experience gap. We have retained some good players for this level and can put a decent eleven out. However when injuries and suspensions kick in the the squad looks very light. Hopefully we can strengthen with a mid field shithouse and in the fullback areas. I think we still have loan spots free so it’s important we fill these before the window closes. Avoiding relegation is the first priority so the sooner we can get into positive figures the better, though after yesterday confidence should be sky high.

Also when James Collins rolled on Tickle accidentally on purpose.

Poor Ref

Good to see you back.

I'd agree we deserved to lead at half time but I thought we when we scored it was during a spell when Derby were on the front foot.

They may well have been on top but tbf we defended well with Tickle commanding his area more like a seasoned pro & not one making his 2nd/ 3rd first team appearance. Too add to that there was some cool & calm passing out under pressure prior to the astonishing 9 mins of alleged injury / time wasting that was added on. During that spell it was just a case of lump it anywhere which just ment yet another Derby attack....hopefully it's something we can learn from if that sort of injury time is to be the norm...🤔

Clare was definitely prone to falling asleep off the ball defensively. Derby’s big chance for the second goal which Tickle saved well, there’s a video online with the perfect angle of the chance, the player ghosts in beyond Clare, who is caught ball-watching thinking no one is behind him.

Fine margins because if that goes in, it’s 2-1 and game over. Probably the key play of the game from Tickle.

For those asking about the injury time, there are new rules this season replicating the World Cup. Ref stops his watch every time the game stops and adds it all on. Say goodbye to time wasting.

Good post MIW,
glad your back and hopefully we are back on the road to recovery after the turmoil of the last few years.

''Say goodbye to time wasting''

I hope your right,
otherwise another 30 minutes could be added on.

Time wasting....wit nearly 9 mins, doubt it somehow & then to add another 2 mins on top, wtf has that come from???
Plus if they're going to be consistent in aspects of the game like that then they need to also have a look at throw ins & the walking if 10/12 yards from original throw in, not to mention free kicks away from where the actual foul was committed...🤔🤔

Like I say they add time on for every stoppage now. Subs, celebrations, set pieces, the lot.

I’m not a huge fan of it myself, personally this could all be avoided if refs were more strict in terms of dishing out yellow and red cards for time wasting. This is what happens when you let players take the piss all game then only book them in the 90th minute, like a goalkeeper does so often. Book them early, threaten them with red and the time wasting stops. Simple.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the beginning of added time being phased out from the game and being replaced by a permanent stop clock like you see in basketball etc.
