Our Illustrious Sponsors

Vital Champions League
Due to being preoccupied with denigrating the good name of our prospective new owner, the drama queens appear to have missed some real news!

The Club sponsors are on the naughty step with the gambling commission:

Everyone associated with this once great club do not seem content unless they are dragging our name through the mud.

Problem gamblers need to take some personal responsibility FFS. It's not even like a chemical addiction thing where people get withdrawal or anything.

They are a betting company they should be able to take bets, how many supermarkets or off licenses check whether their customers are alcoholics?

I have some sympathy as it can wreck peoples lives but as I said why is everything all about absolving people of their own responsibilities and making everyone a victim.

That isn't true, people with obsessive natures do suffer severe withdrawal symptoms when the obsession is removed.

While true in itself, it is actually illegal to serve alcohol to anybody already intoxicated, though more should be done.

Nobody is absolving them from any blame, just demanding that multinational businesses operate in a socially responsible way.

Personally think the whole betting thing has got completely out of hand. I see my young nephews being brought up in a culture of betting on football matches. There's a subliminal message being presented to them these days that if you follow football, you bet on it too.

We're going to have massive issues in future years with young people having their lives wrecked, because that's what can happen if betting gets out of control.

Advertising of betting should be banned, in a similar way to tobacco was. That'd help.

People could just not do it though. Betting is a mugs game if people can't figure that out then I don't see what else they can do. Cigs tell people they will die if they smoke but they still do. It's like junk food having to have warnings on it or advertising being banned. What about personal responsibility?

Agreed. But over here we're going through a similar situation which involves betting ads during the 5 to 6 evening news, also watched by many kids. In addition to MUCH advertising during Rugby League games watched by millions including many children. and there's talk of doing something about it but at times we're a nation of slow movers.

It's wrong.

Oh yeah every sports programme now you get constant betting adverts and facking cor blimey Ray Winston on the custard opening his norf abart the facking in play.

Smoking is a good example. I'm in my forties now, but when I started smoking aged 9, adverts for cigarettes were everywhere, both of my parents smoked & every shop sold cigarettes to children of all ages. It was normalised to a massive degree.

The question wasn't should I smoke or not, it's just what people did. By the time I hit senior school over 50% of my classmates smoked.

It's taken a long time, but now advertising cigarettes is illegal, you can't even see them in shops & have to ask the shop assistant to go into a special cupboard to get them for you (it's less embarrassing to buy porn, probably), they're sold in standardised packs I believe (I quit 6 years ago so don't see them anymore), it's banned in public buildings & in many public places & it has become almost unthinkable for children to even see cigarettes never mind actually get hold of them.

The attitude towards smoking has changed, mainly down to governments forcing the tobacco industry to be more socially responsible. People do still smoke, but the younger generations taking up smoking is massively reduced compared to 30/40 years ago.

Similar needs to be done with both drinking & gambling. At the moment if you watch any sport there will be an add break offering to help you place bets while getting drunk & ordering a takeaway.

People do have to take personal responsibility, but when the youth of today is bombarded with offers of alcohol, fast food and gambling at ever turn it becomes a standard part of life, almost expected of them, why on Earth should we be surprised when that has a catastrophic impact on some people lives?

Yeah I'm all for stopping advertising as much (no idea why the law was relaxed) but I think on their website punishing them for that seems a bit harsh and personal responsibility has to come into when people have gone onto a website.

The fact that it's easily accessible makes it different, again there is a level of personal responsibility involved, but if you ever tried to give up smoking, drinking or drug addiction you'll know how hard it can be to overcome addiction, can you imagine how much harder that would be if all you had to do was pick up your phone to get instant gratification.

If there was an app that gave you instant nicotine & adverts telling you how great it was to smoke every 20 minutes nobody would ever quit, would be impossible.

I'm a reformed smoker of 35 years and gave up 30 years ago. It's not easy. But I believe that when it's directed in part at kids it's wrong. It's easy some times to put a thought into a childs head and has to be stopped.
It's the same and even worse these days with grog, at least it is over here but where money's involved look out it's going to be a slow process.
