Who were our star performers in October?

Top of the pile is LEWIS MONTSMA, returning to his best with some fearless performances at the heart of defence. His cross-field passes are getting better by the game, and his two goals bizarrely make him the month’s top scorer.

CHRIS MAGUIRE takes second place, returning from injury to show us exactly why Michael Appleton was so eager to sign him. Further to what he does with the ball, his activities off the ball have also attracted plaudits from fans who fear Lincoln may have become too soft.

In third place we have CONOR McGRANDLES, who has stepped up to the captaincy in style. Playing an unfamiliar role at the base of defensive midfield has not been easy, and his excellent diving header against Shrewsbury shows his eye for goal is still there.

An honourable mention this month goes to Dan N’Lundulu, missing a top three placing by 0.01 of a mark. Dan looks dangerous after an injury-hit start to his Imps career, and hopefully his first goal at Wigan will give him the confidence to score more regularly and make the centre-forward position his own.

The average team rating of 6.29 is slightly lower than September (6.35) and is the lowest of the season so far.

Top two spot on.
Bishop in third though.. is a surprise.
Many players (like Scully) has done lot more and contributed more than him so far I think.

Very close. Bishop was in first place at the end of last month but has dropped away in October.

Scully has produced a curious season to date: very good in his first nine games (average rating 7.24) but poor in the nine games since (average 5.94, with six scores falling below the par score). Nevertheless, his current average is 6.57, just below Bishop. Let's hope it isn't because his head has been turned.

The rest of the averages are (remembering that some of these have made few rateable appearances):
4. Scully 6.57
5. Griffiths 6.53
6. Fiorini 6.49
7. Poole 6.48

Great stats, thank you. And a fab new profile photo! 🥰👍

Another point of note is that the top three players home and away are completely different. Does that suggest different tactics, bringing different players to the fore?

Really good stats Scotimp - thank you.

Do / Can you weight them at all according to number of appearances or consistency?

Eg 10 x appearances at 7/10 must be worth more than 1 x appearance at 10/10.

Nor sure how to reflect this but would be good if it could be done.

good insight as it stands though and thank you again.

That is exactly what we do at the end of the season in order to establish which players have made the greatest contribution to the season as a whole. As you have identified, the results would be incongruous if not. This is the explanation from last season's Player of the Season article:

"At the end of the season, a multiplier is applied to each player's average rating dependent upon the number of appearances each player has made. This is done for three main reasons:

a) it is relatively easy for a player to perform very well over a smaller number of games. This can be particularly noticeable when a player is brought in on loan for a short period: that player wants to make a good impression for a variety of reasons and often raises his game for that period. The player is also less likely to pick up an injury or suffer from the effects of fatigue. Conversely, it is far harder to perform at a consistently high level over a greater number of games due to the increased likelihood of physical and mental fatigue, injury and loss of form. It would be inequitable therefore to make no allowance for these factors.

b) to build in a measure that reflects the importance of each player to the side and their overall contribution to the season. It is fair to assume that the players who have made the highest number of appearances have been the key players.

c) conversely, it is easy to forget the contribution made in earlier games as the season progresses. Conor McGrandles was excellent after returning from injury, but can you honestly say how effective he was beforehand? On the other side of the coin, was there anyone from the earlier part of the season who contributed to a significant degree but has been forgotten since?"
