Michael Appleton Pre Portsmouth

Vital Champions League
Ahead of the Tuesday night match, Michael Appleton focussed on the trip to Portsmouth during his press conference.

Portsmouth - No new injury problems. The knock Brennan Johnson took on his ankle versus Northampton related more to a pre existing injury and isn't serious. Whilst a little light numerically, The Imps travel with a strong squad available. Playing Saturday to Tuesday helps momentum when the side is winning which is why MA wanted the Gillingham game to be on, as against Northampton during the early stages it looked like a team that hadn't played for ten days.

The Opposition - "We are going to have to play at our best or close to our best to try and win on Tuesday"

The long trip to Portsmouth doesn't allow much time but MA is not unduly concerned on the basis that most preparation relating to matters such as patterns of play are established pre season. Noting Portsmouth's heavy defeat to Hull in their last home game, MA fully expects more of a backlash than if it had been a closer result. Portsmouth will be hurting and Imps will find out in the first 20 minutes. He will make sure The Imps are ready to compete or 'we' will find ourselves a goal or two down.

It's a Different Imps side this time - In the reverse fixture Portsmouth faced a Lincoln side decimated by injury to key players notably the centre halves and number 4 position (Liam Bridcutt). For that game the Imps had lost the partnership of Lewis Montsma and Joe Walsh who had been very effective in the preceding games. This time around the experienced duo of Adam Jackson and Joe Walsh plus Liam Bridcutt are available.

MA sees having those three experienced players as a massive boost as they will be able to help the younger players gain confidence to start the game well. If Imps do the side are capable of winning the match.

"It will be very, very different in terms of what Portsmouth are going to come up against".

A marker for the season - "It will be a good indication if we are more than capable of staying where we are". The Imps must concentrate on ensuring they maintain their consistency to date.

"If we get enough positive results over the next four or five games it's going to be very difficult for me to try and down play something".

MA reiterated that the squad are way ahead of where he expected them to be pertaining to points garnered and their development. In part it is down to good recruitment but very hard work and the ability of the players to take on information are big factors. Having gotten into this position MA commented that having had a 'taste' Imps want to stay there as long as possible.

EFL Trophy draw - MA recognised that Imps have a very tough draw with Hull going so well and top of the league. It remains a great opportunity as the one competition that every team entering each year thinks they can win.

"Hull are on fantastic form. It's going to be very, very difficult but we're more than capable of doing it".

The experience of Bridds, Walsh & Jackson will be key for the first hour or so ... if we can keep them out, they may get frustrated and our pace on the counter attack late on might hurt them.

What a crackin' game to look forward to, I'm absolutely gutted we can't be at Fratton Park for this, as I reckon the atmosphere would've been tremendous.

Yep real shame, I really enjoyed the trip there last season (albeit we weren’t that great). Wonderful old football ground and proper fans.

I couldn't make it due to work commitments ... and have still to tick it off, although I stood outside it last summer after coming back on a Ferry from a camping holiday in France.

I took the Pompey Crew there last season and slunk away after! Would have no problem getting them to go this year and would have bought you all a pint in the Good Companion! Oh well, next year then!

Never been. From the pics on the Quiz thread looks like a great ground (although I guess redeveloped a fair bit).

My one and only visit was in November 1979. Two of us hitched from Lincoln, leaving on Friday afternoon. Nice chap in a Smiths Crisps lorry got us to London (all the quavers we could eat). A mixture of walking, bus and another lift got us to Guildford. Worried that we would miss the game we opted for a coach to Portsmouth. Made it to Fratton Park with 10 minutes to spare.
We were awful, got thumped 4 : 0 and it started to rain as we left the ground.
Long story short, we got back via Nottingham lunch time on the Sunday.
To say we were pissed of would be an understatement.

That’s brilliant.

Obviously it doesn’t say specifically but if this was a couple of seasons ago, managers would have been up all night watching the video of Hull’s win, come up with loads of analysis and had the team having a video preview for 2 hours (at least). Feels like we worry less about the opposition and more on how we perform now. (Not to say we don’t do tactical briefings)

It's pretty much my favourite away ground visited. The atmosphere with a full away following would be brilliant.

That bloody bell. Any club that needs to pipe out noises not from the crowd need to take a look at themselves. Hold on...

Great ground to visit, excellent fans, and a good atmosphere. Last years 1-0 was a nothing game but enjoyed attending Fratton Park for the first time. Hopefully we don’t lose to a goal line tackle from Marquis this year.

Is the Shepherds Crook still open? It was my local when I lived on Goldsmith Avenue when I was at the then Portsmouth Polytechnic back in the early to mid 1980s. Ideally placed for Fratton Park. Great ground and great fans. I saw City play there in 1982. My first City away game and my first game at Fratton Park. We went one nil up, but ended up on the wrong end of a 4-1 hammering. It was a strange old game. The fog came down and you couldn't see what was going on. You only knew what was happening when the Fratton End cheered Pompey scoring another goal. How the match wasn't abandoned I'll never know.
Saw a few classic games at Fratton Park during my time down there, including the infamous Pompey v Saints FA Cup 3rd round tie in either '83 or '84. Nearest I've ever been to a war zone.
