Match Thread: Lincoln City v Wigan Athletic

We'll play better than that and lose (see last Saturday).

You couldn't argue too much at the time with those on here who said after Wigan scored that we would lose, but with plenty of time to go you got the feeling that we just needed a bit of a lucky break (like their goal was) or a moment of magic to get back in the game. And that's what happened. I'm sure if Steve Thompson had been commentating he would have said "for me, this is a free kick for a left-footer" - and of course it was, which made Grant's effort so special. Would like to see it from behind the goal, but he can't have scored a better one.

In the end, what with Walsh's effort cleared off the line, and a late effort from Scully on the left that the keeper palmed away from under the bar, we were well worth at at least the two goals.

Worrying thing was the number of poor final balls, especially in the first half - including from Grant of all people, and some disappointing performances over the 90 minutes from the likes of Johnson and Scully.

Others probably won't agree but over the 90 minutes I rated Gotts the best player - he seems to be growing into that position, although again he wasn't really tested defensively. Montsma by his standards I thought had a fairly average game, in fact I thought Jackson was the best centre back for us tonight.

Second to Gotts I thought Hopper was our best player overall, didn't do much wrong and scored the winning goal.

Our ability to stay in games when we're not playing well is quite impressive. I think we're seeing inconsistency within games more than we're seeing inconsistencies from game to game so that becomes more important.

I know it coaching in terms of organisation but it's also a mentality thing from the players. We might not have the power in the side of previous seasons but we still seem to have that bit of steel in us, which you don't always get in 'footballing' sides. We've got a good balance.

Yep, for me Hopper and Gotts were the stand outs with a lot of our players having very under par performances on the pitch. As I have said a few times recently, winning games or accumulating points when not playing well is a good habit to have.

I agree, Gotts was MOM tonight. However, he is able to play more like a midfielder against the poor teams because they do not attack him as a straight defender - the better teams will. I still don't like him as a right-back, although he may well grow into the position the more he plays. No doubt he has ability, though.

Thought it was excellent tonight, not necessarily as a spectacle but too see a young side come from behind and earn a valuable 3 points.

Interesting to note a lot has been said about how young Wigan were, yet we had a younger team out there tonight. It was fair to say that we knew they wouldn’t be adventurous, but we hung in there and in the end deserved the victory.

Weren't great but dug it out. Kind of match it's vital to win if you're looking for a successful season, and good experience to do so against a defensively minded side.

Was thinking how many places between us and Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Mansfield, Notts County & Chesterfield to name a few
Even Wigan - they were three divisions higher than us as recently as 2016-17, but could be two divisions below us this time next year. Football changes very quickly now.

Eyoma tends to get picked in those games though...

Or a lot more if they completely implode financially and do a Bury.
