Match Thread: Lincoln City v Exeter City

If we drop Rhead The Exeter players will have a party they will be so relieved. He caused then more problems than anybody else during the first match. We have the hardest working side in the whole division but we don't have a creative midfield to slice open opposition defences. Danny is simply playing the way we have to with the players we have. I am sure players will be added to the squad next season to give us more options. I think we will beat Exeter and get to the final.
Whatever happens I will be extremely proud of our achievements this season we are now a club to be feared whatever division we play in.

Exactly, we’ve been trying to find a plan b and 4th striker all season. Knott was supposed to be, and could still be, the creative midfielder and we thought we had deals for attackers sewn up.

with only 3 games max to go it was a bit late to be saving williams. and he has hardly been used to this point to say he even needed resting.
something must not quite be right with him though, as since rowe was injured he would be the obvious left footed choice, for balance. balance which the team especially lacks with habergham missing.

on a similar issue, the writing must be on the wall for sean long, as since habergham has been out, we have tried wharton and wilson in full back positions in front of him.

it was already going to be a big ask to perform well and stay in the tie on saturday, even with the full first eleven. our chances were then further limited when we are missing the likes of rowe, freck, habergham - and with bostwick + eardley apparently carrying injuries. in spite of this we still dominated the second half...

ideally, we need 3 or 4 of those walking wounded back at 100% for thursday - if we get through without them it will be another cowley minimiracle.

Sean Long is injured.

Have you noticed as well how reluctant we still seem to be at shooting from the edge of the area? A couple of times Woodyard was in a good position to let fly but opted to knock the ball out wide.

And I don't agree with dropping Rhead, he won everything in the air yesterday.

Nice to see Eardley having a couple of dips from outside the box. He looks the most likely to score from distance, as he wraps his foot around the ball very well.

Not quite sure why Frecks hasn't scored from long range since he joined. He's usually deadly from range, but has either totally mishit his shot or has just been missing fullstop.

Sean Long is injured.
shows how stretched we are i suppose. what is the injury?
he was on the bench on saturday, and came on... we are playing a dangerous game picking and then playing injured players.

or did he get injured in the last couple of minutes on saturday?

i think it's more that Long is carrying an injury. Having not started since the Crewe debacle, means that he is probably not match fit either.

I agree that a 4-4-2 diamond system would be worth a look with the players we have at present and the idea to go narrow. However after quite a few years of managers and coaches clearly not having a clue I completely trust the Cowley's in what they choose to go with.

I mean who on this board would have gone with Rhead/Palmer/Green at the start away at Coventry. They know far more than I in this

To play in a diamond though you need 2 specialist full backs prepared to overlap and provide width and right now we don't have 1 fit full back who you could trust to do this without risking them breaking down with an injury that would see them taken off.

Carrying an ankle injury according to Danny post-match on Radio Lincs.

This is a very, very good point. We were narrower than a Lincolnshire country lane in the first half against Yeovil, and but for a slightly tepid performance from Anderson, would have looked the same against Exeter.

I think there are big decisions for the Cowleys to take for the second leg, and of course most of these depend on fitness: Habergham, Frecklington, Bostwick, and maybe others we don’t know about (Wharton?).

Just looked at the betting for play off promotion and Lincoln, Coventry, Exeter and County are all joint favourites at 13/5 - that's just how close a call it is...

I imagine the Cowleys have looked at stats and we are more likely to score from a cross (one goal for every 28 crosses, remember) than a long shot.

Hopefully Frecklington is fit. I think if anyone is close you would try and patch them up and get them out there. Personally I would put Woodyard on the bench with Bostwick in the holding role for this game but I guess thats unlikely.
I can see why Wilson was right back on Saturday as they were knocking diagonal balls into the forward and Eardley was probably the best option at left back but i think we missed a trick as they were vulnerable down the left and as well as Wilson played Eardley would have created more and I would like to see him back there.

Woodyard would never be on the bench for a match like that also he’s probably the most match fit player him bostwick and frecks has to be the best 3 we have in them positions Palmer rhead and green up top for sure too

I know you can't let the risk of extra time dominate your thinking but do you really think we'll start with all 3 of our main forwards? It'd be a hell of a gamble.
