Match Thread: Lincoln City v Charlton Athletic

A well deserved win in the end and some much better performances. Oh I do love a last minute winner to get the bank roaring.

Would have been disappointing not to win that because Charlton were dreadful. Easily the worst team I've seen us play this year. They created nothing from open play and some of thier passing at times was very poor. No idea what their game plan was beyond smashing it long which Montsma and Walsh defended with ease. We still look shaky with balls into the box and the dending for thier goal was shambolic, but it did feel more solid.

We played some neat football and played the diagonal ball very well and regularly (can't believe that Charlton didn't pick up on it). Though the crossing/ final third wasn't at its best it was still a slight improvement on recent showings. Had we nailed that, we could have scored a few more because Charlton really were there for the taking.

Great to have Walsh back in the team, there was one tackle in the first half which was just sublime. Not only can he defend well but he brings the ball out well from the back. Maguire was the player I hoped he was going to be when we signed him. Hungry for the ball, picking up pockets of space and a mesmerising first touch at times. Mcgrandles was also superb, much more like the player he was last season. He plays the holding nidfielder role well and was looking to give options to the defenders. Delighted for Poole to finally get his goal.

iFollow audio on right up to 6 o'clock.

On the subject of i-follow can someone, anyone who has any possible influence over these matters please ask them to stop it with the sodding replays?

They are completely unnecessary because we have a -10 second button right there on the screen so if we want to watch something again, we can.

There was one moment in the second half when they were showing a replay of one of our attacks which came to nothing. When they returned they showed a replay of the attack we'd just had which we missed the first time because they were still showing the replay of the previous attack.

Scunthorpe's former physio believes his side should have won because they should have had a blatant penalty just before Lincoln scored the winner, and Regan Poole was clearly offside.

Sounds like a desperate man, Charlton's supporters are making their views clear.

I like the iFollow replays as I watch on my TV rather than on any device where I can roll back 10 seconds myself.

Its the execution of the replays which is poor. Whoever is directing the coverage is often too quick to hit the replay button when the action has already retarted.

If they haven't had a bad enough day, one of them posted this-

Poole was offside to be fair but it would have been a travesty had we not won that.

That's sad. I might shed a tear or two.

Thought we looked a much more progressive team today rather than recent weeks, although it was obvious at times they hadn't played much together with forward runs being passed to too late and sometimes missed completely. Sorenson unlucky a couple of times with such runs.

Charlton looked completely toothless all game, only gifted a goal by virtue of some poor set piece defending and otherwise they appeared to have no plan of how they might score.

Thought Robson and Walsh were excellent, Charlton went two up front second half it seemed to me and starting being much more direct but Walsh won everything that came his way regardless.

I guess if you insist on letting Monstma spray the ball out wide left all game then eventually something will happen, I didn't quite understand why they kept letting it happen but Lewis put some beautiful balls out wide.

Sorenson had some good moments and Maguire reinforced my impression that his delivery is excellent. Bishop and Fiorini tended to disappear at times but once we had seized control of the midfield after 15 minutes or so we started to run the game.

We finally started getting the ball across the 6 yard box rather than hitting the first defender when it was out wide and duly benefitted.

Delighted for Poole when he scored, he'd struggled on again after copping a challenge but he played on the same as Plymouth and was justly rewarded for his toughness, his reaction at the end spoke volumes I thought.

Fans were fantastic, they really got behind the team and drove them forward when we were searching for a goal.

A few more performances like that and we'll soon be cruising above any thoughts of relegation.

Well that was encouraging.

I was a bit surprised when I saw the starting line up and wondered how we would play without a recognised centre forward. But to be fair to Maguire he did really well and could be the best option until January.

We didn't create an awful lot first half but were well in control. Scully had a really good opportunity but somehow managed not even to get a decent shot off but that was about it.

What was obvious was that Charlton would have been happy with a point. They were time wasting after about 10 minutes and Griffiths was a complete spectator.

The value of more first choice players being available was evident. Walsh, McGrandles and Maguire were all assured and making the right decisions and we looked much more like we knew what we were trying to do.

The second half we gained a bit more confidence and began to really threaten. We lack some physical presence and pace up front with the side we put out and that will be the difficulty for the next couple of months. We will play well and on occasion look a bit toothless and probably won't get many undeserved victories.

Nonetheless, we did play well and the three points were fully justified on today's performance.

Perhaps most pleasing was the performances of the likes of Sorensen and Robson. Both had what could be described as slow starts to their Lincoln careers but put in improved performances.

We may need to be patient and expect set backs and poor results at times but I think most people will at least be looking forward to Tuesday night with at least a semblance of justified optimism.

HUZZAH!!!!
That's made my day. Scuttle off back to their petrol less city.

Just home, a few bullet points from my pov:

1) We decidedly challenged the midfield area, higher up the pitch more aggressively.

2) Possibly because of 1, we noticeably had more players in forward positions when we were in possession including (consistently) two to four in the opposition box during open play. I can't remember the last time we had numbers like that getting into the box.

3) We started the game like the home side trying to make something happen, rather than waiting or hoping it would.

4) Whether it was the break, the return of experienced players, combination of, or something else entirely; we looked a far more balanced and comfortable side.

Finally 5) Charlton were complete gash. Having (only) watched then for 90 minutes I have absolutely no idea what their game plan was, what they were trying to achieve or how they intended to go about it. Were they trying to play football, go direct, counter attack - I have no idea. They were the epitome of bland pointlessness.

Was on the 6.30 train heading back to Hykeham and load of them were on that heading for Nottingham due to that.
Some of their fans had clearly come for a fight, even the police couldn't believe a couple of them walking back up Sincil Bank reckoning they could take 20 of our best lads...

Well worthy of the three points today, only one team were intent on attacking and winning the game and it wasn't Charlton. Made a difference having Walsh and McGrandles back in. Didn't quite knit up front in the first half but we didn't play with a striker so perhaps it took a while to get used to it.

Maguire was excellent. He started up front but got deeper and wider as the game went on, Robson had a very good game at LB, probably aided by Walsh being back in there. McGrandles was everywhere, Walsh balances the CB pairing off being left footed. Montsma had his eye in with the switches of play (how often did Gunter get caught out with those?!), no-one seemed to spot Sorenson's runs until he was offside. Fiorini lost the ball more than he'd have liked, Scully worked hard and had a few half sniffs without being able to get shots away and Bishop was tidy enough.

Arter lucky to stay on the pitch as well for what looked like a stonewall second yellow card. I don't think their number 20 touched the ball until 15 minutes to go and he passed it straight to our player! Left sided CB was decent, though.

Charlton weren't particularly unorganised, but had no idea what to do with the ball. Very slow tempo, no obvious patterns of play and were definitely happy with a point. Don't think Griffiths even had a save to make? Their only two attempts today was the header that lead to the goal?

You can see what we're trying to do, the patterns of play and movements are there to see and without going over old ground, we're obviously in need of a little more in attacking areas, especially a bit of pace to be able to play those balls in between the CB and full backs as we like to do but up to that point it was nice and tidy. If we can keep doing that, and improving, we'll keep picking up points and fingers crossed we can do some early business in January to solve those issues.
