Not my finest hour was it that title! Hey ho, to the point a new left back could be on his way with Marcos Painter poised to sign for Pompey according to the News.

Sorry for that, pretty poor title really!

Then again if you are called Marcos Painter a title as such is not really that poor is it?

Well, is it...

Anyway, the latest news from the News is that Pompey are looking to 'freshen up' their left back issues with the signing of free agent Painter.

He has been training with the club recently, following his release by Brighton this summer – a trail with Yeovil had also taken place with him training with a previous club Birmingham, and playing some development games, to keep his fitness up.

Left back has clearly been a problematic area for us this season so far and we are in need of a 'touch up'.

I like Dan Butler he is a 'bright' prospect but he started the season ropey and his replacement Danny East clearly is not a left back and looked somewhat out of place in the role against Accy last weekend.

Long-term you would think, well I at least hope, Butler is the left back but if funds permit it I would not be opposed to Painter coming in and 'mixing' it up to give Butler some competition.

A deal until January, initially, had been mooted with the option of extending further.

This would, of course, require approval from the football league...

PLAY UP POMPEY!

Its not really a name I recognize but looking at his CV, its a decent aquisition! Butler was unfortunately at fault for the goal at Bournemouth which knocked us out of the cup. He was clearly being targetted thoughout the game as the "weak link" too. I agree he's a prospect but I think this is good move from GW.
From what I've seen, Danny East reminds me a lot of a certain Carl Dickinson. I don't know where his natural position is, but I'm hoping its not LB!

If he doesn't have a good finish & doesn't keep (the ball) within the lines, that may end up as his profession Lorna.

I just hope that he prepares well & his performances don't just paper over the cracks.

very good Tim :1:

not seen much of him, maybe once or twice and definitely know the name - as we have seen previously a 'name' and from a 'higher level' does not always mean much but lets hope we get something positive here and can have a 'quality finish'...

I've been told by a Brighton fan that he is in fact a portrait painter, not a decorating type of Painter. :17:

Agreed Rug. I thought he slotted in really well.

With Moutakil on the right, the full backs look Ok (albeit the defending from Moutakil can be suspect)

It is the centre halves that aren't there just yet, but give it time.

i think the tall guy, whats his name again, will become a good central defender - both he and devera looked better but better teams will trouble them.

view to a kill worries me abit but he is good enough - better than east at right back for sure!

hopefully butler can benefit from painter being here too?

I thought Painter looked very very decent today. He certainly can read the game well enough, he looks Chumps level for certain, and not only can he defend, he gets forward well and offered good support down the left, everything of any consequence that happened in the first 45 came down that side.
He looks a good piece of business and to top it all he was organising all around him, just what we've been looking for!
We're not out of the woods yet defensively but by God we look a lot better and are certainly heading in the right direction.

So Marcos Painter has said he wants to 'win the fans over', early days I know but the indication is he will be quite capable of doing this.

Win over the Pompey fans?

I would not worry too much if I were Marcos Painter.

Pompey certainly, on that evidence, are not going to be looking to get in somebody else to 'finish the job' as if the weekend performance is anything to go by he does exactly what 'it says on the tin'...

What an impact he made, right?

Such a composed footballer he looked. He looked comfortable on the ball, with him looking for this all the time and was not afraid to use it. He also offering great organisation to the back four, which looked to help, with great balance brought to the left side of the pitch.

Defensively he looked sound and offensively he offered plenty, he looks like he loves to get forward and is quite capable of doing this, acting more like a wing back than full back at times.

Painter is saying the right things so far, he has said that he wants to 'win over the fans'.

Well, one summer does not make a swallow and all that, but if he continues to perform like that he not need to worry about winning over the fans as he will just continue to impress them having arguably done that already?

Alas, we cannot get carried away, it is just one game and players often make an impact early doors – lets see how he is doing in 5 or 10 games time, then proper judgement can be given...

Like I say though early signs are that he is a quality footballer, above league two level so we will do well to keep him beyond January but for however long he is at Fratton we must enjoy this and embrace it.

'If' he remains an affordable option then extending his deal beyond January, if he wants to stay, would not be something we think too much about I would not think...

Dan Butler is out future though.

He has great potential but is not 'fully glossed' yet but Painter could help 'get that job done', he could certainly help aid his development.

If I were Butler I would be 'Painters apprentice' and pay close attention to what he does, take this onboard and look to further and expand my own game too...

Like it Rug!

And yes, absolutely nothing to worry about - a very good performance for a debutant. The guy oozes class in L2.

I think there are a lot of players on the market. Some just hold out to see what they can get, and if the clubs have done their business before they decide, well they are left with nothing. Hear the alterative was Yeovil.

He must have thought to himself that Yeovil will get relegated, Pompey will get promoted (hope he's right!) and within a few months he'd be in League One regardless, but better to be with a bigger club & enjoy the ride. Well it sounds plausible anyway!!

suppose it does, and to be fair leaving brighton for pompey doesnt mean he had to move either - assuming he is based in the south, which you would think he is?
