Man City 0-1 Real Madrid (Agg: 3-4)

HALF TIME! Rodrygo with the all-important goal, his 17th of the season and fifth in the Champions League.
Man City have had one or two chances but nothing that has overly tested Lunin in the Real Madrid goal.
Plenty of work for Pep Guardiola to do at the break with the champions currently heading out.

GOAL! Man City 1-1 Real Madrid (Agg: 4-4) (De Bruyne, 76)

MAN CITY ARE BACK LEVEL!
Lovely ball from Rodri out to Doku, who attacks Valverde. The cross has Rudiger's feet in a tangle as his clearance lands at the feet of - who else - Kevin De Bruyne, and his finish is fired high into the roof of the net above the head of Lunin.
A puff of the cheeks from Carlo Ancelotti. Game on.

At last Man City get what they deserve.
They have been excellent in this second half. Jeremy Doku causes all the problems, but the ball falls to Kevin de Bruyne and he lashes it into the roof of the net.
As he smashes it into the roof of the net, the roof of the Etihad comes off!

'Brilliant half from Man City'

It has been a brilliant half from Manchester City.
The thing for me is what Carlo Ancelotti is going to do and how they are going to improve.
Yes Man City only got one goal, but possession wise you can see they are incredibly dominant.
What have Real Madrid got left?

88 touches in the opposition box

Manchester City had 88 touches in the opposition box against Real Madrid; the most on record in a UEFA Champions League match (since 2007-08). Their 33 shots were also the most in a knockout stage game in the competition since Liverpool (34) versus Atlético de Madrid in March 2020.

De Bruyne impact in vain - more Opta stats

  • Kevin De Bruyne has been directly involved in 24 goals for Manchester City in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League (13 goals, 11 assists), the most by a player for an English club in the competition (overtaking Wayne Rooney's 23 for Manchester United).
  • Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has been directly involved in eight goals against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League (4 goals, 4 assists); the joint-most of any player, along with Giovane Élber (also 4 goals, 4 assists).
  • Manchester City midfielder Rodri completed the most passes (142), created the most chances (5), and recovered possession the most times (11) of any player in this game. He also completed more passes in the final third in this match (68) than Real Madrid did as a team (35).

'I wouldn't plan for that'

On Real Madrid's game plan...
I wouldn't plan for that. They didn't [defend well]. Erling Haaland's header that hit the bar... If that is a bit lower, it goes in.
The chance for Kevin de Bruyne - the game would have ended then.
Madrid conceded a lot of possession and defended a lot. Nine times out of 10, the win would have gone to City.

'We dominated the whole game'

Manchester City
Manchester City defender Ruben Dias to TNT Sports: "I don't know what to say. Frustrating. We dominated the whole game. You go to penalties. The effort was there. We had chances. It's a difficult one to take.
"You always end up doing everything to try to avoid penalties. That's what they wanted.
"The team was there. We fought, we had our chances but it wasn't our day.
"We had the chances. Sometimes the ball goes in, sometimes it doesn't. Now we have to look forward at what's to come in the season.
"We won't have much time to rest. It's a busy part of the season. Now is a time to be strong especially in the head. We're still in two important competitions."

Manchester City
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola: "I have to say thank you to these players from deep in my heart because the way they played. But football is about winning and we didn't do enough yet we were exceptional.
"Sometimes you can win on penalties and sometimes you cannot. But in the game we did not convert the chances that we had, even though we defended really. Everyone performed at a high level. We said we would have to be at our best to play Real Madrid and they were."
