Lions led by donkeys

Stolen, but this sums up my sentiments:

The COVID-19 crisis has made it perfectly clear that the same old class politics of 100 years ago is still alive and well today.

Back in 1919, our ancestors came home from spilling their blood in the wars of empires to lay dying of “Spanish Flu” in some workhouse or other. Jump forward a century and we see those who’ve suffered a decade of the Tories’ war on the poor are once again sent off to the front. Once again we’ll end up in makeshift hospitals; this time in the vast capitalist cavern of the Excel Centre or whatever other repurposed warehouse they can find for us.

Once again it is “lions led by donkeys”, as the Eton toffs who would have us believe they are “born to rule” prove they couldn’t run a piss-up in a brewery. With 12 weeks’ notice, they are still playing catch-up. No clear strategy, no ventilators and no PPE (personal protective equipment). Once again the working class are being sent over the top by braying toffs. Once again they are woefully under-equipped. Once again they cough up their lungs on the incompetence of their rulers – only this time it is COVID-19, not mustard gas. Once again our leaders try to con us it is all in the name of our nation and our families. And once again the reality is that it’s about the ruling class continuing to make their profit on the backs of working-class sacrifice.

For weeks we’ve been hearing stories of people being forced to risk their health, that of their families and that of their communities and the health workers who will treat them, as they are forced onto packed trains to do jobs which their bosses claim are essential – when what they really mean is essential to their bank balance. Workers already exploited in the gig economy, in the bogus self-employment of the building site, in the call centres, warehouses and distribution centres, are told to work or starve. Not to feed the country or to transport essential supplies – but to keep the economy running. Plenty of bosses were lined up to claim, like Mike Ashley at Sports Direct, that their little bit of the capitalist profit-mongering machine was an essential service. Building sites stayed open to build the luxury penthouses that would forever stay empty as ghost investments for the super-rich. Government offices refused to let workers work from home although the technology was available – meaning they still had to make the hazardous journey into work, despite their customer-facing functions having been suspended. Royal Mail refused to suspend lucrative door-to-door (or junk mail) contracts. Every unnecessary job, every unnecessary worker being forced to travel, is another potential death – and since this is a contagion, an exponential number of deaths leading from that.

And all of the workers who are being forced to work, whether genuine key workers or not, report the same thing in their workplaces. Lack of hand sanitiser or washing facilities, lack of social distancing and lack of protective equipment. Across the country, it has taken walkouts to force management to provide the safeguards they are legally obliged to – proving how uncaring and corrupt they are. Like in all wars, this lack of equipment and these walkouts are downplayed while government ministers talk about the Blitz Spirit and the Queen quotes Vera Lynn. Fuck off with your nationalist lies! While Boris, Charlie and the other parasites get tested at the drop of a hat, our workmates are dying! Undiagnosed, uncared for, leaving their families, their children, unable to even grieve, unable to see them buried! Transport workers, delivery workers, cleaners and health staff; all being sent over the top by the incompetent Old Etonian Generals, coughing and spluttering their way around the country, to their castles and second homes. Second homes?! The workers they are condemning to an early grave struggle to afford a home of any description! Just like it was a century ago!

Make no mistake, the working class are heroes. We’re keeping this country running, and we’re doing this in the face of the bosses’ continued greed and lack of care. You can fuck off with your bleating about people in parks. It’s the bosses’ lack of care and dereliction of duty that is putting us at risk – not a couple of c**** with a frisbee.

And although they were unable to plan for the pandemic, the boss class are already planning to take their place back at the head of the queue when the crisis subsides. Now we see who the real benefit scroungers are! Profiteers sniffing around government contracts. Billionaires self-isolating on their yachts and tropical islands while getting the government to pay their wage bills. An unending parade of parasites queuing up to stick their snouts into government’s coffers. Well fuck ’em! Not this time. We owe it to our comrades to build a society that allows us all to dream the same dreams; that allows all our children to thrive. We’ve seen just who keeps the country running – and just who cares for nothing and no one but themselves. Fuck the bosses! Power to the workers!

I agree with your sentiments. Sadly this nation appears to be brainwashed and simply accepts the lies with a shrug of their collective shoulders. If there were an election tomorrow I have little doubt the evil Tories would increase their majority. Not sure how we ever get out of this. Power To The People.

All we can do is keep pointing out the obvious in the hope that people will wake from their slumber and the penny will finally drop.

Even if everybody (or even most people) suddenly became aware of the situation it would still be a struggle. The boss class wont just cede their power and privilege because we demand that they do.

As it is the boss class don't even have a fight on their hands. They're just laughing at us. And yet people still lap up the lies and defend them. How can people be so very stupid and/or blind?!

George V and his generals at Buckingham Palace in 1918
This saying was supposed to have come from senior German commanders describing brave British soldiers led by incompetent old toffs from their chateaux. In fact the incident was made up by historian Alan Clark.

During the war more than 200 generals were killed, wounded or captured. Most visited the front lines every day. In battle they were considerably closer to the action than generals are today.

Naturally, some generals were not up to the job, but others were brilliant, such as Arthur Currie, a middle-class Canadian failed insurance broker and property developer.

Rarely in history have commanders had to adapt to a more radically different technological environment.

British commanders had been trained to fight small colonial wars; now they were thrust into a massive industrial struggle unlike anything the British army had ever seen.

Despite this, within three years the British had effectively invented a method of warfare still recognisable today. By the summer of 1918 the British army was probably at its best ever and it inflicted crushing defeats on the Germans.

The upper class got off lightly
Although the great majority of casualties in WW1 were from the working class, the social and political elite were hit disproportionately hard by WW1. Their sons provided the junior officers whose job it was to lead the way over the top and expose themselves to the greatest danger as an example to their men.

Some 12% of the British army's ordinary soldiers were killed during the war, compared with 17% of its officers.

How many more of these bloody threads saying the same thing over and over?

I'm joining Bert for a week

Or maybe the majority of people aren't brainwashed into a very fixed notion of "Left wing good, right wing evil" and vote on the basis of which party they believe most represent them in any given election.

Baghdad:
"Although the great majority of casualties in WW1 were from the working class, the social and political elite were hit disproportionately hard by WW1. "

Disproportionate to what?!

Are you suggesting that the working class should feel sympathy for them?!

3x6:
Good, see ya.

Baghdad (again):

This isn't a Left/Right issue. It is a class issue.

12% of the ordinary solders were killed. Ordinary solders we almost entirely working class.
17% of the officers died. The officers were largely made up of the upper classes.

As a proportion of their social class, someone born into an upper-class family was statistically more likely to be killed than someone of working class background. More working class people died in absolute numbers but not surprising considering there was significantly more working class people in the armed forces.

Are you suggesting that the working class should feel some sympathy?!

On Remembrance Sunday I think of all who died regardless of their social and cultural upbringing. I don't try to split the different deaths into groups on the basis of social class and consider the deaths in one group to be somehow more tragic than deaths in another. All deaths were equally tragic and deserve the same level of sympathy.

Sure it is a class issue. But isn't the stereotype accepted on here is that Labour cares for the poor and working class, and the Tories only care for the rich upper classes?

Your percentages are meaningless as presented; that's the problem with stats wrongly used. The absolute numbers should have been put alongside the percentages.

Missing a lot of posts due to my ignore list (I'm open to listen to others views, but some are just not worth the bother) guess it's the same old apologists?

You're not missing much tbh. Baghdad's reminding us that it took people a long time to figure out how to fight a modern war, and pointing out the holes in the claim that the ruling class simply is untouched by war and catastrophe. However, it's become a discussion about proportions and percentages of what? I'm waiting for life expectancy figures for junior officers on the Western Front. Buddha, meanwhile, is giving a fair impression of trying to squeeze a grand piano through a very small coffee grinder and, understandably in my view, getting pretty steamed as a result of his exertions. He's either trying to rally us for the last fight or exhorting us to desert -it's not clear, but if you're looking for junior officer material to take the men in your direction, he's showing promise.

You know that stat those shows that a higher percentage of BAME people have died of CoVid-19 compared with white people? Completely meaningless as the stat doesn't show the absolute numbers of deaths next to them.

It is only once you look at the absolute numbers and see that the overwhelming majority of deaths have been white people that you can draw the correct conclusion.

What a shame that after 2 world wars the world is still full of hatred, whether it is against a religion, a race, or someone of a different class, what is there to separate the instigators of such hate.

But how would you keep power if you did not promote ‘divide and rule’.

Does it signify another war is coming ?

I would rather see people just learn to live together, there is only one world and only one human race, Your relentless discrimination of Muslim's, or other posters relentless discrimination against a group based on their parentage, education, financial status, you are all showing a bigoted view of life.
Tolerance and forgiveness is the only way to advance humanity, we have tried hatred and war for thousands of years and it doesn't work.

The big mistake is to think that the answer is just around the corner and it would all be ok if we just woke up and realized the simple truth. I'd wager as much harm has been caused by people who claimed that as by the divide and rule mob.
