Lionel Messi obscenity - n/g

How many on here wouldn't accept that amount of money if offered it? He appears to be quite philanthropic chap, so there's some good coming from it.

How did we reach the point where a player gets £2.36 million pounds a WEEK?

What's Ronaldo getting?

This is madness.
It's called Capitalism, demand and supply.

Obviously as leftie dinosuar I object. However, as per the Daily Mail that often screams in disgust at such matters, what do those to the right of me politically propose we should do? Ask them nicely to give it away?

This is the system we live in. If you don't like it, vote and campaign to change the system.

I have no problem with people being successful and earning that sort of money provided that the pay the appropriate tax. You should ask the left-wing socilaist Spanish government why Messi is allowed to get away with not doing that....

Football is the biggest sport on the planet and hugely popular world wide and a multi billion pound industry In its own right. Messi is the best player on the planet, one of the best that’s ever lived, a football genius. If anyone deserves that much he does. After all nobody complains how much hollywoood actors get

i have more issue with very ordinary players in our third tier getting 10k a week.

I detest socialist, immoral re-distribution (i.e. theft) and the ill-liberaltiy that goes with it.

But I can still think that no footballer is worth that sort of money.

How does the "market" signal effectively Messi's price ?
Do fans of Messi's Club pay through higher ticket prices ?
I don't think so.

It wouldn't strike me as contrary to capitalism if paying spectators could vote on such nonsense.

I agree 100% with the first paragraph. One of my dad's best friends from way back became the President of a huuuuuge multinational (incredibly nice man) and earned over 10m a year. My sister-in-law (who hates football) says that's fine cause 'he earned it' but a footballer earning the same amount hasn't. It's a baffling viewpoint to me. I don't think people realise the size of the market and the selling power some of these players have. These are the best few hundred at something out of 7 billion people.

I was on the Eastern coast of Timor-Leste waiting to hitchhike and ended up playing football with some local kids. They all had Barca or Real kits on. With no common language the only way I could identify where I was from was to point at myself and say "Wayne Rooney". Knowing what I meant they started shouting names of English players at me.

On the 2nd para however - even those in L1 are in the best few thousand our country has to offer. It seem a lot for a 'shit' league but the career is short and they're still a tiny % versus us mere mortals who took up the sport.

He's worth it cause someone is willing to pay it. If Barca didn't then someone else would pay him that to join them.

If no-one did then he wouldn't be worth it and would get less.

Totally agree with you. Btw, I have no problem with people earning a lot of money for exceptional talent. I think the differences between rich and poor are too extreme and obviously there is a reasoned debate about how wide the difference should be.

I stand to be corrected but I had heard that Messi was pursued for tax dodging (as has Ronaldo, I believe).

My brothers earned more than me by taking more risk and more demanding jobs. No problem with that. Not into envy politics. Sorry if that doesn't fit into your view of how lefties like me think, including my support of the police.

.

He was investigated, found guilty and was sentenced for a really long suspended jail sentence plus paying a large multi 10s of million quid/euros/dollars fine. The fine was equal to the amount of tax he owed. The court make his jail sentence suspended as the country would be better from all the tax he'd correctly pay if he wasn't in jail. I think he argued the usual "I signed anything put in front of me",

His dad took the blame and they both paid the taxes. Ronaldo and jose both caught at the same time and both paid the tax due.
