Last summers transfer window

Bolshie Budgie

Vital Champions League
During last summer's transfer window we roughly spent £51m plus agents fees. About £10m of this was before the end of the financial year ended 30th June 2021.

On the website associated with a colour there is a thread about Michael Bailey's article on the Athletic (its now on page 3 of that message board). If the contents are true, then you have to wonder about how our transfer activity is managed. It seems that Farke wanted three quality signings:

a) A DM - Andrich - correct player identified and he joined a German club for just under £6m., so presumably the fee we agreed was similar. So we lost out regarding this player because we wouldnt pay the £60,000 per week requested yet it is claimed that we ended up paying this to Norman anyway. This situation is made worse by the fact we needed a quality DM not a CM.

b) A CB - correct player identified again but we lost out regarding this player as we wouldnt agree to pay the £13m Celtic requested. Given that we were after only three new players (so the penny pinching wasn't because we had to make the budget stretch over numerous players as I thought) we could have added £3m to our bid. So we lost out again.

c) A wide attacking player - may be we could get one for £10m? Dennis Man may have been an option given that his Italian club had been relegated to their tier 2.

Add on GI (£6.2m) and Gibson (£8m approx) gets us to approx £43m....that even leaves £5m for Gunn.

So instead of adding the quality we needed (with some resale value) we have got what? No wonder the fans are unhappy.

A consequence of our failure to remain in the Premier League for any length of time is that the players that would help us stay up are reluctant to join us. They are more likely to go to a more reliable club.
A way to overcome this would be to offer higher wages but we can’t manage that.

Agreed Rex. It was stated when we provided the cash up front so that our training ground could be improved to attract better players, we would obviously need to pay better wages to keep them with us. I don't think the powers that be kept their end of the bargain.

Or have owners who can afford to pay them :grinning:

Agree with that. Players won't want to join the yoyo club, so we end up with the unwanted/injury prone players or playe4s who will have zero loyalty and want out as soon as things go tits up as we all know they will....is Rashica one of these?

So did DF only want three players or just 3 quality ones and some others?

Not even wanting a forward shows that DF hadnt learnt from last time out. He was going to go with two forwards in pukki and idah...really?

So DF wanted a quality winger and got tzolis, Rashica, sargent (ended up a winger as was crap as a forward).

Wanted a quality CB got kabak

Wanted a quality defensive midfielder got no-one as Normann and Gilmour not defensive midfielders.

Can't remember if if was rivers, eadie or lap dog lappin who said that it's not so much about spending but the fact the club will never spend massive amounts in wages. I can't remember if he said they had capped the weekly wage.

The article being posted about claims that DF wanted 3 quality players and I believe we were commited to signing Gibson and GI.

But there are claims that we are paying Pukki and Krul big money, ie £60k - £70k per week. This wouldnt surprise me that these two are on big money by NCFC standards.

They be back down to a lower level come summer. Reports of 40% and 60% cuts

How did he think going with two forward would work? He did that last time with pukki and drmic and that didn't work....the whole club didn't learn.

Firstly Drimic wasn't up to it and may be they thought a goal scoring wide player would help take some of the load of Pukki.
