Lanky began the season so well with what should have been the basis for a title challenge. Today we begin a match v Middlesex from which we need at least a decent draw to ease the pressure leading into the final game. So, what went wrong?

That very close defeat v Durham when Jimmy was only allowed to play for two days didn't help but surely when Wagner returned to the New Zealand squad and both Davies and Buttler were crocked it was the time to recruit a top gun from overseas? It is all very well to develop our own youngsters but they develop better in a winning team. Barring a miracle v Middlesex we will still be biting our nails well into the third week in September. We may yet be glad that Hampshire are playing Durham in the final round. A good points haul from this round would give us the odds of a draw at Warwickshire.

Croft won the toss again and again chose what the opposition clearly wanted............,.Milehighsex have made a steady start.
