Jose is an ex-Spurs manager!

If we want to bring up luck, I think they were lucky to have all 11 men on the pitch, their RB who took out LoCelso when he would have been clear on goal was both dangerous play and the last man - he should have been sent off.

I think that was the orange card incident I referred to during the game. It was a nasty and deliberate tackle. Much like Sons on Gomes months ago. I can take positives out of the game. Dier continues to cement his CB place, Toby proved his experience over Sanchez is still worth playing him. Winks did well, Loco was better than against Sheffoeld because he had Winks backing him up. The players had more focus defensively than the previous game and they showed they care and have not thrown Jose under a bus.

In fairness, we played containment football, which after our last defensive display, I totally got, Winks was between loco and Soso we controlled the midfield and stopped their wingbacks (normally there greatest threat) dead. To that extent Aurier did his job and played to instruction brilliantly, I expect more from Everton when they went behind, but apart from two good but off-target longshots (think one was a powder puff one) Lloris and our defence looked very comfortable.

So, you're right it made for a boring game as they weren't going to open up until the death and we weren't putting anyone who might open them up and looked like we would just wait it out..

In the end Jose cancelled out their normal game-plan, so to that extent it was 10/10 but 4 out of 10 for entertainment value - but think that for now, entertainment value is the least of Jose's concerns.

For me I thought different I thought Aurier looked poor going forwards or backwards.I thought we were very poor at holding possession and our passing was awful even against a team that didn't press us at all.Football is not just about defending you cannot win a match if you don't create.Defending is only a third of the game you have to pass and retain possession then you need to create and score. You can't go through a season just drawing nil nil.For me he only got 3 out of 10

Aurier was poor going forwards, but was virtually faultless in his defending.

I also said that we gave the ball away too much and that our passing was pedestrian; they did press, but we negated their press again and again and so it was a tactical null game , we held the CM'er for most of the game but didn't do enough with it as we were so defensively minded.

Jose used to love winning 1-0 or 2-0 as did our north london neighbours for many years - it's not the football we want to watch, but until we have a seamless system with greater consistency and awareness about our play trying to play off the frontfoot with limited creativity is going to prove (as we can see from the evidence so far) difficult.

We are missing badly (as we did for the last 15 months or so) the best efforts of Eriksen, who did so much of this but was never fully appreciated for it - we have to fix that before I suspect we can find some new mojo in our play.

I just can't see that I thought Aurier was awful front and back.I honestly thought that apart from Toby and Hugo who were superb the only other one was Dier he was good defending but he gave the ball away far to many times.I was just underwhelmed by the whole game.We did not play well rather than Everton were poor.I have put myself through pain again by watching the game again trying to see some of vwhat you see all I see is Everton letting us bring the ball out hardly pressing us in our half. Both teams looking awful and we just got lucky.I just think Everton were so poor and so were we.

What can we say, we all see it differently; Aurier with an average rating of 7.0 across five different outlets was our second ranked top player, Lloris was top @ 7.7, our lowest was Moura @ 3.5 the second lowest being Son.

No one is arguing it was a great entertaining game - because it certainly wasn't, we negated Everton's wingback tactics and direct style of play, which is why they looked poor and why we looked so unambitious; so not in the least surprised that none of us were impressed by the game - to this extent. Jose did what he thought he had to do.

The passing accuracy for both teams was exactly 83%, not great, but not shabby either, we successfully passed 370 times out of 448 attempts, they 341 out of 413 attempts. So around 1:20 of our (78) passes didn't reach their intended targets. Everton's failed passes were exactly the same percentage, as we had more of the ball - the average for all Premier league clubs last season is 84%, so passing stats for successful passes is bang on - of course in the top 4 teams the success and passing in total is far higher.
It's worth noting that Winks was 97% accurate with his passes.

We need to be doing better, no question.

S1569, I have read the debate between yourself and X, straight after watching last night I was in 100% agreement with you, because to be honest I watched 11 v 11, and in that I didn't really notice much, yes comments like that was poor/crap/useless ensured, thus negativity from me as yourself, now earlier today I re-watched the game with lets say more intensity and scrutiny, resulting I think in a fairer outlook, thus I am now with X specifically regards Aurier, he had a good game defensively he kept Evertons probably most dangerous weapon very quiet, Digne, who incidently should have been sent off.

Am not having a go at you, its just a 2nd look and taking more notice can affect the opinion. COYS

Yes in agreement with you there, like my school reports "can/must do better" lol!
which I did incidently!

Aurier doesn't have too many fans on here, simply because he puts in so many poor defensive displays. Last night however, albeit that Everton didn't test our defence too often, he did a decent job. Imo the entire back four put in decent performances, having Alderweireld back in the starting line up did seem to have a calming influence and inject more confidence defensively.

Passing accuracy I read the stats all I am saying is how many of those passes were actually just 5 yard sideways passes and how many were defence splitting passes.Football is an entertainment game and neither team last night entertained.I really see it different and found myself agreeing with Gary Neville (I feel sick now ) he said it looked like Everton players looked disinterested as did we.I just didn't see good play I saw crap play by Everton which made it easy on us.Yes we sat deep and stifled them but Everton just didn't try

I agree that's what I have been trying to say.We were not great but then Everton did not test us at all apart from distance shots.Toby did make the defence feel calm.Thst was the best thing Jose done restating Toby

I could just see two very poor teams cancelling each other out . Not by good play but because they were not awful

To be fair, there is no point Jose going crazy with Aurier. He is the only fit, specialised RB and we all know that his form is up and down like a yo-yo. Everton was just one of the good days and even then, he offered no real quality on the ball. He never does. The 7 or 8 times he was in a great position against Sheff Utd, and couldn't even kick the ball properly for some of them. I'm sorry, but that is not a top 4 quality player, not even mentioning his horrific defending for their 3rd goal.

What will be unforgivable at the club level is if nothing is done to rectify the problem in the transfer market. It was the summer of 2017 that Walker left and we've had 3 years of torture as Spurs fans ever since.

This is where Jose earns his respect from someone like me. He has managed Aurier well but must be ruthless in this coming year with him. He is NOT the answer at our club and it's unfair to us fans waiting for 5 years for a credible RB. We're almost back to Stalteri, Pamarot, Chimbonda, Hutton etc.

What do you mean “almost” 😷🤭

I watched Hutton at the end of his career for Villa, I would take that Hutton over Aurier at the moment. Aurier has the physicality for sure. He was better against Everton and I wonder if Jose can mold him into a half decent player ?
