John McMahon

Co-op Stand Imp

Vital Reserves Team
Assistant Manager at Morecambe. First time I’ve come across him since the infamous home game v Runcorn, August 1987.

Was that when Batch wiped out one of their forwards in a one on one and only got a yellow? Think the rule changed a year after.

He’s the forward that was wiped out, Steve McMahon’s brother. Think he broke his leg. Unbelievably Ref was from Sleaford and he was there as a fan 2 days later!

According to the Echo match report, Batch was booked for 'clinically' bringing down Runcorn forward Dave Mather. No mention of him breaking his leg. Batch was then 'embroiled in fisticuffs' (yes, this actually was 1987 not 1887) with John McMahon on the goal line. Julie Sherborn, it must have been with the report, deciding that referee A. Ward of Sleaford was being lenient, although describing his officiating as 'amateurish.'

Ah Julie Sherborn. She qualified as a referee as a publicity gimmick, but brightened Lincoln Referees Association meetings up somewhat for a while!
