Jack Payne released by Blackpool

PhilK66

Vital 1st Team Regular
And still only 25. Somehow his undoubted talent got lost along the way perhaps ego got the better of him?

Would be a good signing but only if we can move on 1-2 of Hess, Knott and Byrne, as we would still need some more physicality in midfield and not sure we have room to sign 2 midfielders.

Was superb for Blackpool in the playoffs and has asked to be released in order to move back south. Reads the game well. Short and long range passing is very good, and he always gives the defenders an easy pass with clever movement which helps prevent hoofing.

thought he had a good game in the play off final so surprised to see he's been released

Apparently he wants to move back down south (maybe rejected a contract offer from them already?), I wouldn't mind if we signed him but not a player we really need

I know some say you should look at a what a player can do and not what he can't do but considering midfield is the only area where we are already overstocked I would point out that although he can pass and has a reasonable engine, how would you rate him in the following?

1. Tackling and physicality
2. Tracking the opposition when they have the ball
3. Goal ratio
4. Heading and winning the ball in the air
5. Temperament.

For instance I think he would have been as much good as a chocolate teapot in our home game v Bolton last season when we were totally outmuscled.

I can't think of a single thing that people said we were lacking last year that Payne would improve.

Only my opinion and I need not say that I was never a fan.

Not sure of how he's done in recent seasons. It is somewhat of a shame to see him in League 2 though when he left us to better himself.

Is he too close to what Wright is meant to provide to be of benefit / to provide something different? also as a poster above suggests, he is maybe a bit lightweight, and I am not sure him and Wright in the midfield would be great from a physicality perspective.

In the middle of midfield we have:

Dack - could potentially leave
Wright - could potentially leave
Knott - could potentially leave
Hess Jr
Morris
Byrne

Will Oldaker be trusted to be a starter?

The key question is if he is better than those expected to stay.

In terms of the checklist then I'd say yes to the temperament aspect. As for the others

1) + 2) He was never a defensive midfielder whose game was getting stuck in. If Morris is asked to anchor the midfield then his tackling is good enough.
, it depends on the role he would be asked to play. For me he was someone who could do a bit of everything. He is not a defensive midfielder - Morris will do that role. And he won't be as creative as Dack.
3) He prior scored 5 goals in about 100 matches for us. He is no Bradley Dack on fire.
4) So should we only sign 6ft plus players? Is heading really a key skill for a midfielder.

What he is good at and what we have lacked is someone in the middle of the park who is happy with the ball at his feet and is happy to dictate the game and set the pace.

The issue is whether or not since he left us as a talented youngster has he improved, stayed the same or gone backwards. On the odd match I have seen him since he left, he looks to me to be a better player than both Byrne and Hess and would get the nod if he signed. Of course, he might have raised his game for those matches.

Exactly right John.

The fact we have a plethora of midfielders is totally irrelevant. None of them are any good. In fact I'd start him above every single centre midfielder we have on the books (not including Dack who is an attacking midfielder who should have a free role).

Is he better than Knott, Byrne or Hess? Most definitely. He's more likely to play than the injury prone Morris. Wright? He may be off, and regardless I think I'd have Payne over him anyway.

Anyone who make himself available and plays the balls on the floor to feet is a step up from last season. Anything that negates hoof ball is good in my book. Get a big dominant bloke in to play alongside him and that's a damn good centre midfield duo.

I'd have him back in a heartbeat.

Every time I've seen him play since he left, he has impressed.

I think he lost his way a bit at Peterborough after being made captain and was then put out on loan. Something went wrong but I don't know what.

He impressed in the play off final and was probably the best player out there.
I can only assume that Blackpool wanted him but he turned them down.

Knott to Lincoln and Payne to us would make sense.

No thanks. Too many small midfielders already and I think Pennock is looking to make us a bigger more physical side next season.

My exact point. He is not a big dominant bloke which was what we were screaming out for last season, Everyone seems to assume that Aaron Morris will do that job but he is coming back from his second ACL injury and I don't think we should put huge expectations on him for a considerable while.

Josh Wright would have looked a lot better alongside a big dominant bloke. So would Hessenthaler or Byrne. They were all looking for a lower league version of Ngolo Kante or Victor Wanyama to play with and so would Payne. Someone who will break up play and support the defence at set pieces.

So, if we sign Payne and the big dominant bloke we need, we will probably be blowing the budget on midfield again

I watched blackpools playoff final and never even thought he was playing until he got injured . He's in the Andrew crofts mould for me so much promise but not a great deal of anything else . Can we not for once sign a quality centre mid who can create for us and possibly bang in some goals .

Crofts who had 5 seasons of championship football and 1 in the prem after leaving us? I would say he had a very good career.

If Wright left for 100k and two of Byrne, Knott and Hess went on frees of cheaply then signing JP would be an improvement in my opinion. Maybe he isn't the combative player we need, but perhaps that can be Morris. Would be a decent signing for us, not a brilliant signing but that's more to do with the rest of the squad rather than what he brings.

The only thing that would have done us any good against Bolton was about 5 more 6 footers. Not signing 1 player because he would not have made a difference in 1 game would be a weird approach to recruitment.

Payne would be better than all of our non attacking midfielders apart from Morris, and we don't know if he will ever be back playing.

Payne played his best for us next to David Wright? (I think that was his name), on loan from palace I think?? He was the strong tackler and Payne and he did brilliantly well together. It was no coincidence out season failed off after Wright went back to his parent club.

Payne needs to be playing next to a combative cdm so simply wouldn't work next to Josh Wright. If we sold Wright then he'd be a good option to replace him.

Kante is 5ft 6 inches.... Not sure he is a good example of a "big bloke"...

It is a squad game and with the expectation that Pennock might look to play with a three man midfield (his late experiment with a back three last season a decent indicator) as he did under Pulis, we could easily squeeze him in as one of them. If you play with three in midfield, then numbers mean you can *sometimes* get away with not needing a specialist tackler. Plus considering his technical ability, a midfield of Dack, Payne and Wright on paper should be good enough to keep possession - and if you got the ball, you don't need to win it back. And if Morris is fit and playing, Morris is decipined enough with experience of playing as a defender to do the ball winning role.

Ability trumps height...

Why does Payne have to be the big tall defensive midfielder in your mind anyhow??
