Charles Dickens in Nicolas Nickleby used the term gammon to describe large self satisfied middle aged men who became florid in complexion when becoming hyperbolic in extolling their extreme patriotism in large parts to disguise their essential selfishness and corruption. I would have thought that all well read British people would know that.
