As mentioned In a prior thread, I've little time for religious gob-shite at this time or anytime. This however makes the world seem better (ps - fuck the god stuff if it ain't you're kettle}

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word,
But as Thou dwell'st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea.
Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile,
And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee.
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

Breaks my heart every time that Wilco. Even at the start of the Great North Run when I was standing there snivelling like a big girl. I am not one for religion at all, but that is a fantastic song.

Good job the Toon never get to cup finals!

I'm not religious either but this always gets to me. We have it on every Christmas eve and morning.... one to many whiskey's and the tears roll. I doubt any soul could fail to be moved....... Beautiful.

It was given the elbow for a few years after we were there in 74. Little or no involvement was given by the fans who chanted their own ditties while the man in the white suit tried his best to no avail. A shit day from start to finish.

As much as hymns may hit the spot, I can just see Mick Martin, if he's reading this thread somewhere, face reddening up wondering what the heck we're doing discussing them.

He'd say it's more akin to Newcastle Online's knitting pattern debaters.

i ALWAYS HAVE DEAN MARTIN ON (OOPS THE CAPS) on christmas eve and going to enjoy tomorrow with the little uns.

Learn't that song word by word thanks to grandfather Major Wilco - Battle of Arnhem.

It's perfect and most importantly humane.

Merry Christmas one and all.

Must admit I used to like listening to Bobby darin years ago when I found a cassette in the house as kid. Have you got a collection of him singing christmas songs? Might get one for next year.
