Vital Champions League
At many away games we've been over the years there are multiple big burly stewards sat in front of the stand with their back to the pitch facing the fans and watching us at all times for 90 mins. If the stewards do that there is no way that guy gets out of his seat, runs down to the front, climbs over the advertising boards and then runs about 30 or 40 yards unchallenged to get on the pitch to Grealish - they'd have him grabbed before he got anywhere near a player.
While at other away games we've been the stewards aren't watching the fans like this or even worse they are in position but they are sitting watching the game instead. Another potential reason is they are putting people into this role that are completely inappropriate - if you are organising your stewards you wouldn't have a older gentleman or teenage girl in that role - you'd have them helping people to their seats or doing other parts of stewarding rather than on pitch security as you need someone who can hold pitch invaders down if needed.
What happened with Grealish is a failure in stewarding by the clubs organisation being sub standard or more likely some individuals just weren't doing / able to do their job properly. This weekends events will likely see the standard of stewarding improve as some of the individual stewards or clubs who had become complacent about things like this have had a big reminder of the reason that role is so important. There is no way a fences are going back up and they aren't needed if the stewarding is done properly.
