Torquay United have surprisingly released Joe Oastler, he was previously an academy player with pompey in the premiership era, but was released in March 2008, then picked up by QPR at one of the premier league exit trails for players released after 2 years academy post 16. 13 clubs were willing to sign him, he decided to sign for QPR

He then was signed by Torquay United after a successful loan spell, joining them in June 2011 on a 2 year deal. He was part of the Torquay United team that reached the plays off 2011-12 season.

Joe Oastler can play in variety of positions including right back, central defence and centre midfield, He will be 23 in July, so fits in with Guy Whittingham's policy of signing younger payers with experience of league 2..

the only drawback is that pompey seem to have options in those positions, but due to his versatility, a good age profile, Portsmouth connections, and league 2 experience Joe Oastler should be the type of player that Guy Whittingham considers to sign for pompey.

know of the guy (living in devon) and have heard the name a fair few times - must say i am surprised they let him go...

certainly fits the type of profile we are going for, and his previous with us is also another box ticked for whittingham.

all this said i cannot see we will move for him as we are pretty well stocked in that department now - if we were in the market for another defender i do not think we would have released alex grant?

there will be plenty of frees available over the coming weeks, I do wonder if there was more to the Alex Grant situation as he has been snapped up by Stoke so quickly.

seemed a strange one didnt it wiggy?

the way i viewed it tho, and could be wrong, is that he has had some injury problems - with that in mind, and others that can play where he does, without the luxury of being able to 'wait and see' these days the decision to let him go was taken, even with the thought he could (if injury free) cut it in mind being there...

could also be that he wanted too much money of course!
