(FOOTBALL TALK!!) Pompey v Scunny

Pompey welcome Scunny to a cold South Coast this afternoon, as the Blues look to forget a very dismal previous week of 3 losses in 3. It's back to Fratton though, where none of these defeats came, an

Well at least we scored? For those that went, was it a better performance?

Also, cheer yourself up by watching this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=um8rci0PSbE

Well that's the first 3 home points out of the window. Whatever happened to Fortress Fratton... someone left the drawbridge down ???

Whoever said there was no consistency in this team was wrong! This team is incredibly consistent... fill in the rest of the sentence.

Wasn't good by any means but we have seen much worse I would say.

Very telling reaction at full time tho.the masses aren't happy...

Tbh, like i say, I do not think it was the embarrassment the song said but frustration is definitely growing among the crowd.

Ok, stats don't count for everything, but a look at these below tell a story of a team away from home in front of a large hostile crowd, and.... without a manager. The stats in the LH column are Pompey's.

lose Tuesday and the board will hope Witts resigns, they can't afford a sacking, but please 1 up front at home?????????????????

Wasnt a lot of love around Fratton at FT Jake.

I didnt hang around, tbf I never do win or lose, but a lot of anger towards Whittingham and players. The Fratton End sang 'that was embarrassing' and few players hung around.

In fairness to him Whittingham did his usual applaud of the fans but I only saw Ferry fully committed applaud likewise Barcham.

As someone said to me whatever has been said the meeting with the board this week wasnt to congratulate Whittingham, whatever is publically said privately he is under pressure and today intensified this - agree with wiggy that defeat on Tuesday will leave the board hoping he resigns so they dont have to sack him, which they soon will do...

As for the game, we were much bettter 2nd half and have definitely played much worse but we are just so frail at the back. It wasnt good enough tho.

Despite what Whittingham says we didnt deserve too much today. Yep we hit the bar and the post but Carson made 4 or 5 excellent saves to keep us in it. He was at fault for a goal but could have got MOTM as it is I would give it to Holmes, who should have stayed on.

Potts did ok but to give him the MOTM award was crazy, that was decided before a ball was kicked methinks...

Whittingham and Barcham were the only ones I saw that applauded the fans at the end. Barcham can keep his head up - he was one of the few that put in some effort IMO.

Bradley had a mare and spent most of the game on his arse. Devera can only head a ball in one direction - upwards. Ertl had one of his better games.

We scored against the run of play. Bradley was at fault for the equalizer - If he'd put his foot through it would never had gone for a corner resulting in the goal. I know Carson fumbled for Scunnys second but without him we would have gone down for a hatful. Knew the writing was on the wall when we couldn't capitalize on our only period of play when we hit the post and crossbar.

Personally I don't like the booing and 'embarrassment' chant but I can sure as hell see why it happened. That was the worst atmosphere I have experienced at FP in a long time.

My reaction of the commentary is; we seemed to play decent footie in places and had chances on their goal. I'd say naive at times at the back where we are weakest! Going forward is our best form of defence, we have pace and players who can play at this level and that should instill a degree of trepidation in the opposing defence, but!?!
All undone by teams playing route one and bullying midfield. We capitulate far too easily, our heads drop and the lack of belief is instant.
That I'm afraid comes from the management I'm afraid. There can be no confidence when we have a team of scapegoats scared stiff of making mistakes.
We were at Fratton and that should be sacricant! I wasn't there but it sounded dead! It was so so muted it drew comment after comment from the commentary team on Solent. Have to say I agree, it seems the malaise has reached the stands!
They sounded if on balance that they deserved to win, yes! We had our chances but far too few on the day in comparison, and I think the stats back that up, had it not been for Carson it could of been a few more, I hope he's not made a scapegoat for his error.
It didn't sound like our worst performance, but it wasn't good enough, I never felt like we were going to equalise.
Southend on Tuesday will be much harder I feel and an already fragile confidence could take a battering. Guy and the team need to work some magic, but listening to his interview after Guy sounds like a broken man.

Lets be honest, Scunny were pants, but that was good enough against us. Without Carson's heroics, we would have been beaten 4 or 5. I did not like the booing and I did not join in the full time chant. However the frustration was plain to see. We went through a 10 minute spell in the second half where we never got out of our half of the pitch! The confidence in the side is fragile to non-existent, no-one wants the ball and if someone doesn't do something bloody quick, we will be in relagation battle. Make no mistake. Scunny were managerless and were sh1te, but what does that say about us?

Can't disagree with the match comments we were poor (at times) against a poor side.. and we couldn't get the ball on the floor long enough esp in second half

BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT

Those that think there was a HUGE chant at the end are wrong it was no more than a couple of hundred who in a half empty Fratton End echos like mad.. sure there was frustration and even anger but to think the entire Fratton End were chanting we weren't

AND AND AND AND AND AND AND AND

Anybody who listened to the Guy interview after the game (on Express) will know that he aint gonna resign and he has the full backing of the board ,, HE virtually LAMBASTED Dan Brett for suggesting whether he should consider his future ... Guy was almost aggressive in his response stating that we are only 16 games in to a work in progress and although he will accept the criticism he aint gonna go anywhere ... whats more his responses where almost said with the backing of the board in as much as 'we' are a work in progress

LAUGH LAUGH LAUGH LAUGH

Comedy moment of the day .. My mate Darren who on the final whistle bellowed .. ..

I'M A POMPEY FAN.... GET ME OUTTA HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERE

Football's a brutal game (it ain't rugby) and Guy knew full well what he was taking on when he accepted the offer of management.

At the time, we 'supposedly' had a team that could most definitely hold its own in League 1. It didn't. That team under the management of that musclebound prick Appleton, and then Guy, went on to claim a record we most certainly didn't want. Has that fact already been forgotten? I repeat, this team (on paper) should have been capable of survival in League 1. It didn't.

There was a brief resurgence at the end of the season including a euphoric win over Sheffield United that in my opinion, along with the euphoria surrounding the buyout, gave a totally false sense of our ability. In the real world, nothing had changed. Except of course.. this season we are without Eastwood, Rocha and Sodje in our defense... and it shows.

I think the situation we have at the moment is that of a very inexperienced seamstress desperately trying to assemble that proverbial silk purse out of the sow's backside... not ear.

We will survive and stay in League 2, I'm pretty sure of that. What I'm not so sure of though is the longevity of the feel good factor and its obvious benefits (crowd numbers) for one, into the future. Football by its very nature is a very fickle game, as well as brutal, and so are its fans. Except for me of course.. :17:

So... sack Guy now, buy in some experienced defenders and damn the expense... :9:
