Woodward: We can win nothing and still sell shirts - just look at Liverpool
5 Dec 2013 10:10

The Manchester United executive vice-chairman believes the club's stature won't be hit if they don't win anything, citing Liverpool as a model example.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward insists the club do not need to keep winning trophies to remain attractive to sponsors.

United's vastly reduced debt has been a direct consequence of their increasing number of sponsorship deals.

Their first-quarter results showed a 63% jump in sponsorship revenue, which has continued to rise recently, with even more deals being announced.

And Woodward is confident the trend will continue no matter what short-term difficulties United encounter on the pitch.

Speaking to fanzine 'United We Stand', in an interview conducted in October but published ahead of Wednesday's shock 1-0 home defeat by Everton, Woodward outlined the reasons for his optimism.

"There's still a lot of affinity with the club and interest," he said.

"The reality is that you can't always win.

"Take Liverpool. They still sell an incredible number of shirts and have the second biggest shirt deal in the Premier League.

"They have one of the biggest technical partner deals - and they haven't won the league since 1990. And you can put the last bit underlined and in capitals.

"If we have a bad year we have the financial strength to change the team. We have so much deeper financial strength that instead of selling three players and buying three, we can do five."

And that financial strength also means the naming rights to Old Trafford will never be sold.

"It's important that Old Trafford is Old Trafford," he said.

" The Glazers are actually very traditional in their views.

"People have asked us the question, asked us if we would consider (selling the naming rights). We won't."

From what I've heard Old Trafford is just that...old. As much as I hate the club I would hate even more to see part of the stands collapse during a game.

Why didn't they "do 5" in the Summer then instead of haggling with Everton over Fellaini and Baines and only ending up with one ?

Why haven't they spent on a marquee midfielder to create something now Scholes has gone ? Why have they still got 40 year old Giggs in the midfield being run ragged by the likes of 19/20 year old Ross Barkley ?

Why have they got ageing and injury prone central defenders like Vidic or Camelgob (when he's fit) being run ragged by the likes of Lukaku ?

The 'rags' need them to "do 5" this Summer and it will cost them around £130-150 million if they want real quality and then still have to pay Rugney and the girl their £250K per week.

Let's see if they do.

The dippers sold shirts ok. But they were out of the Champs League for years and that cost them £35-40 million per year and associated sponsorship deals. They couldn't buy top quality either as the top players wanted Champs League football.

The guy sounds like he knows very little about football. Long may he stay at the helm. I think we should all e-mail him offering our congratulations and wish him all our support.
