OK, after a lot of my "thump it" advice I don't deserve a reasonable response.
I'm just going it alone again and have some decent work coming in. I need to have a laptop or similar so that I can work on the move and demonstrate to potential customers.
My own feeling is to go with a small laptop that I can load Office onto, having to do a load of spreadsheets and Word being familiar. Powerpoint is also useful.
Because of travel I don't think the remote (Cloud?) thing is for me.
Once I get a few more jobs in, I will be able to afford to upgrade.
