Chippenham Town 1-0 Lincoln City: What 3 Things Did We Learn?

Right...dog walked...expletives exhausted...let's get on with this

1. Good will is so very hard earned but so very easily lost. The wins and defensive heroics at Ipswich and Barnsley have now been forgotten. I have seen posts on this forum and (although I'm not on them) I'd imagine elsewhere suggesting that we should be looking for a new manager/head coach come Monday. That's an over-reaction, but the reality of a result like this is that Mark Kennedy and his coaching staff are going to be under deeper scrutiny from now onwards. These kind of results can haunt a manager, especially one who is still learning his craft. One result re-sets everything back to the starting point of the season for many supporters and this will be a test of his credentials to get a reaction from the players who, let's be honest let him and themselves down today.

2. The 3/5 at the back formation can be a dynamic attacking formation, but only if you have the right players for it. It's a system which is being used at the highest levels in this country and Internationally. You will see it in the upcoming World Cup. But for it to be successful you just must have the right players for it. Central defenders have to be comfortable bringing the ball out from the back. Wing-backs have to be just as good going forward as defending otherwise chances are just not made. Midfielders must combine that ability to destroy the opponents game but also be that bit adventurous and look forward. At present we have players who can do the defensive bit, but not the offensive one. Consider when we were playing this kind of system under Keith Alexander specifically the central midfield position. We basically played two in midfield then, but now we have two Scott Willis's or Ben Sedgemore's. We haven't got a Peter Gain and that is what is very much missing. So as we move forward through the next two months before the transfer window we must look at where the players are comfortable in playing and adapt the tactics and formations to them rather than shoe-horn them into positions they are not suited to.

3. A reliance of loan deals can bite you on the arse. Jack Diamond has been our best attacking option since he came here. Today, Sunderland refused permission for him to play. Whether that is because they want to recall him come January and to ensure he isn't cup-tied either for them or some other team willing to buy him I don't know. It's a choice they are entitled to make. I don't know if Swansea made the same decision with Jordan Garrick but he may just have made a difference today. It made us toothless though as we were relying on a young striker who has only just come back from injury who was being fed scraps. Days like this show the need to have your own contracted players, not players from elsewhere

The team selection for me showed serious inexperience from Managers point of view.I agree with Sedgeley's point, have some respect for opponents.
Why use such an important game in this (for me anyway)to try out Roughan at CB.Why (for me) leave Virtue, Davenport, and Jackson on bench, and in past playing time for Virtue and Davenport they've both played well and deserved to start, MK did say the squad he named were all fit .Why with Kendall when he plays a game and scores a goal he is not given a run of games, did he play for Sutton on the day, had we beaten Chippenham then he is cup tied.It was the same level of football he came from.

Plenty of publishable content above but perhaps we should be asking "If we can't/won't change 'things' for future games, did Bristol City, Plymouth etc learn anything new?"

Just about calmed down now after nearly 24 hours. Time for measured reflection and a few home truths, but hopefully not knee jerk stuff. However it's a bit more than 150 words. !
(1) I think we showed, particularly in the first half, just how not to play against committed and hugely up for it opposition whatever level they play at. It is hard to hear that we were well prepared, up for the fight and knew what was coming on the basis of that first 45 mins stroll around the park. It was as if playing percentage possession football will win the day. Well not when you have little creativity ( Bishop excepted) and no cutting edge.
We just shot ourselves in the foot, gave them a huge lift and you would have to say that they deserved the victory for their spirit, energy and endeavour. What we should have seen is the imps out of the blocks quickly, in their face, showing our superiority. It did not happen, for 45 minutes, we were passive and strolling. All the best incisive moves came from them up to half time. We were much improved though in the second half and a little unlucky not to force a replay. I think our goal should have stood, and we had several dangerous in the box moments, but nothing quite fell for us. Overall we got what we deserved, though.
(2) Some weird things did not help our cause. None of our star forwards playing and NO Forwards on the bench. I just cant understand why House was not on the bench. I get that he probably needed a rest but to leave us with no plan b forward is in my view very poor planning. Then oh dear we do go a goal down, and a bit like last season it can feel like game over. Only 6 subs as oppposed to Chippenhams Nine , yes 9 subs. Draper starting, and the poor lad looked lost from the start. Before the game I predicted a 3-1 win for the imps, but when I saw the team I was immediately worried, who the hell was going to score the goals? Why were we continuing with 5 at the back against a tier 6 team. Yes i get it if we had say Norton Cuffy and Bramall playing but are Eyoma, Poole, and Robson, attacking wing backs in the true sense? Why was Roughan playing centre half, why were we playing with 4 specialist full backs? These and other conundrums made it feel like we were shooting ourselves in the foot. It probably is true that some of the changes were enforced Diamond,Garrick etc. However there are questions for Mark Kennedy to answer. I don't mean , he's on the cusp of sacking stuff which I have read from some crazy posters particularly if we lose all 3 games this week. It is infact, probable that we will lose away to a Championship team on Tuesday and then I would be surprised if the current league leaders just roll over for us next Saturday ( despite their horror show in Lincs yesterday,). Kennedy is still in credit and learning his craft as a number one and needs time. We will just have to put up with at times, some stodgy fare in the meantime. ( 3) Reasons to be cheerful instead of fearful. Well, I for one am excited by the prospect of getting Mandroui House, Diamond and Bishop on the same pitch. Will it happen though.? There will clearly need to be some formation tweaks for that to happen, and of course, an injury free run. Add to this a good keeper, which we have and a pretty solid defence then we should have enough to not get dragged down to near the dead men at the bottom. Regan continues to lead by example. If only we had other such warriors alongside him. Don't get me started on Diamond and Poole leaving in January, it just does not bare thinking about. As for the manager, I think he is still very much in credit. Despite the promises pre season about how we were going to get fans off ther seats and press on the front foot. How we were going to not have possession for possessions sake. A bit of smooth talking Irish blarney and charm has come back to bite him. What i want now is a few tactical changes although maybe not on Tuesday. ! I can accept pragmatism, I just want humility and bit of flexibility. See you all on Tuesday. Up the imps.

Mark Kennedy indicated post-match that House and Garrick were both not fit enough to play.
I did hear that but wondered about the veracity of the statements. It depends of course on the type of injury, but players play all the time for the cause with niggles etc. We also seem to get so many injuries don't we? I just wondered whether Kennedy thought we had enough to win anyway and was a bit complacent? Maybe I'm wrong?

Did we actually learn anything?
Most City fans on seeing that team lineup will have thought that it was very defensive, most will have thought the midfield offered only limited creativity and pace, most will have thought we’re pretty weak up front, most will have thought shit, we had not better go behind because if we do we may well lose, most City fans had done their homework and learning; and most were about spot on!

We should have learned the lesson that many teams have learned over the years to their cost.
When playing so called inferior opposition you can't just turn up and .
put any 11 on the pitch (because you think all your players should be better than theirs). With a totally defensive formation ready for a bit of a run out.
It doesn't and never has worked.
If you don't start with the right attitude from the first whistle you are fu___d!
