Yes I know that it really was a tragedy, but have to admit the OP did make me laugh.

I was due to fly over Chernobyl a few days after the accident (Odessa to Leningrad) but obviously that was cancelled along with the rest of my itinerary. The Soviets wanted to avoid any nasty Western capitalists (or even thick peasants like me) knowing what had actually happened.
I still have the unused Soviet Visa as a souvenir.
