Brentford...the big one!

Not words I expected to be writing but, even though it’s still September and the season has barely started, I can’t help feeling that, especially after the disappointing 1/6 in the last two matches, a decent performance - and the points to match - are both genuinely called for on Saturday in what is probably the biggest match of the season so far.
It’s not a ‘must win’...no such thing at this time of year, but another disappointment would seem a bit like having to start all over again. Can’t be there - again - unfortunately but any thoughts re: selection and the impact that Lampard’s absence from the touch line might have?

RA, First of all I'm not sure that Lampard has a touchline ban? I read that he only got a fine and would be able to carry on watching from the technical area.
I agree with you that not taking 3 points from this match would feel like being back at square one but if we can play like we did against Blackburn and put a few of the chances away the points will be there for the taking.
I'm not happy with the forward line, not sure who I'd play as the holding midfield player and still think we won't know which is our best side until way after Christmas.
The one thing I have been impressed with is Bogle, he's just turned 18 and is a complete breath of fresh air and that with a rejuvenated Bennett helps things look better.
Anyway the time has come for us to deliver and start collecting more points, playing better on a regular basis and bringing back the crowds at PP.

That’s good about Lampard, if you’re right. I’m a long way away so you probably know best and it was an assumption on my part.
I think one point and another promising performance would be acceptable against such a ‘form’ side but a defeat would be a big set back.
As long as we’re in touch at Christmas/New Year I won’t be worried and I agree there is a lot still to be decided in the areas you mention...just in time for the January window maybe.
Sooner Davies is back the better which might also allow Tomori to play the holding midfield role you identify.

Our one and only blunder happened on 55 seconds when Tomori lost Dalsgaard and his looping header went in off the bar, giving Carson no chance. Apart from that, it was the ultimate performance. Yes, there were short periods where Brentford slightly had the advantage but you are never going to boss the entire 90 minutes.

That's 3 League games in 8 days, starting with a loss, then a draw and a win. The loss was a poor day at the office, the draw saw us do everything but score and the win was simply excellent. What all 3 games had in common is that even the defeat was an enjoyable game to watch.

Wilson had a very good game. His first one for the club IMO. What are the areas on which he needs to improve? He has a little bit of Russellitis in him. Blind alleys and wanting to go too far with the ball when there are good passing opportunities available. His biggest flaw is his immense leftfootedness. How many times did he lose the ball against Brentford because they knew that the ball would be very close to his left foot so they knew exactly where it would be and took it off him? He really needs to work on his right foot and gain the confidence to do more with it than just stand on it.

Mount was brilliant. His point for improvement is vision. Brentford tried, as often as possible, to double and even triple team him. That led to him trying to get past them and losing out more often than is good for the team. He ignores chances to pass early, just like Wilson. Get that right and he will have the whole package IMO.

In short, two great young talents playing very well with room for improvement. That augurs well for us this season and for them in their future careers.

As you all probably know, I am no great lover of the Brothers Madley. DYS supporting absolutely awful refs are comments I have frequently made about them. I doff my cap to Andy for his performance yesterday. His first half was one of the best refereeing performances I have seen in a long while by any ref at any level. In the 2nd half he partially reverted to type but was still much, much better than he usually is. More of the same in future please Andy and pass the word on to your brother.

Finally, an immense performance from the Rams yesterday. None of the players had a bad game. So, who was MOTM? As good as the rest were, they were all nowhere near the level of performance of................ Craig Bryson. Not a blade of grass he didn't tread on. He was everywhere doing everything. Immense.

In all honesty. if Bryson had had a shocker, any one of the other 10 had a shot at being MOTM. It was the best overall performance I have seen in years. Not as many goals as in the Deforestation, for instance, but, IMO, a better overall performance.

Yes,wilson.JPG the young loanees were outstanding, as was the work rate and commitment by Bryson. Nugent put himself about a bit and it just shows how we can destroy a team if they don't come to stifle the game and defend for 90 minutes. Interesting to not we had less possession yet played better and won quite comfortably.................. I guess we just need to get the play and the system right to play against teams who just want to play on the counter-attack, especially at home.

I do think Brentford underestimated how good they were going forward and how good we were in attack. They played a high line and that was their undoing, be it by their own design or good play by the Rams
