Black Friday

I haven't spoken to anyone, bar one or two, who knows what Black Friday means except they feel obliged to spend money because supposedly there are bargains to be had. This has to be the most grotesque tradition we've imported from the USA.
That and Halloween which now appears more popular then Guy Fawkes Night which is embedded in our history. I find it sad that 400 years of history is ditched for a carved out pumpkin.

Thanksgiving Day here. Seven inches of snow day before yesterday. Ploughed in last night. Shoveling this morning and me with a head cold. And I am no fan of turkey. Still, three grandkids, daughter, husband, three brothers-in-law and a girlfriend in bound, so momma's happy, and from that, let's face it, all good things flow. I'm thankful.

Good and agree because that is in USA and I appreciate the history and sentiment. I hope you have a great day. But Black Friday is nothing to do with the UK apart from imposing rampant commercialism. No thanks

Cheers. 30 years here and it still seems daft to me. A bloody great holiday with turkey a few weeks before another bloody great holiday with turkey. And no Boxing Day! Once they've amended the Constitution and I'm President, we'll scrap Thanksgiving and add Boxing Day, and when I'm re-elected for a second term, we'll go Euro and slack off for the whole week.

At least Halloween recognises All Saints Day

Black Friday introduced into UK by Amazon and people have fallen for it without any knowledge of what it represents.

All part of ongoing US imperialism : Coca Cola; McDonalds; Burger King; Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the absolute worst of the lot, Starbucks (I call it Starsucks, without doubt the worst coffee in the world, bland unless you ask for two extra shots).

F**k, need to sit down now just typing the above has got the blood racing.

Tea, coffee, half the food you consume, computers, TV, white goods, car possibly, oil products, pharma products, wine, brandy, rum, vodka are all inmported from those nasty foreign countries; how do you manage?

I'm with Greta on this. I eat English cheese with my English beer, English biscuits with my English tea. Of course it all has to be shipped a few thousand miles, and I'm told it's even more complicated with the tea, but so long as it's all coming in on cats with carbon fiber hulls it's ok.

Rip offs all round!
Mrs Vambo has been watching a holiday where the agent said there would be Black Friday deals to be had.
Last week it went up £300. Today it has '£150 off Black Friday Special' plastered over it. Cheeky buggers.

Ha, ha, extremely droll. Of course I consume many things from abroad my point being only about US imperialism with just a few of their companies dominating the high street. My lady is not an import being resident in Moscow although Ukrainian originally and is certainly viewed as an "import" there on occasions. Me too although I find locals overwhelmingly friendly when you get to know them. A while ago I slipped on ice in the street and fractured my shoulder and the help I got from passers-by and hospital staff was very kind.
