Amazing Era

The Fear

A Wise Man (once sat next to him)
Occurred to me last night what an amazing era it is. Of course we focus on the negatives because that is all the news ever feeds us. However, last night out with good friends for a curry, I checked into a flight for today.

A couple of others were talking about a series of books, so the one got his phone out and ordered the series for the other friend, they arrive today.

Not only that but also we were talking about music and film producers and of course, we had the information at the tip of our fingers. Amazing stuff really.

I've just chosen my room for tomorrow in KL and looked up a few of the destinations I want to go to.

Some of us forget that back in the day, we didn't have mobile phones, let alone computers and this access to the world.

Maybe a thread on the good and interesting things in life might be nice!

The Fear - 20/5/2017 10:53

last night out with good friends for a curry, I checked into a flight for today.

Boring you were they? :3:

I totally agree though - I still find it a bit bemusing that I can order something from Amazon at half ten at night, and it's dropping through my letterbox less than 12 hours later!!

Also, the ability to Sykpe and Facetime people, often on the other side of the world. Just makes the world that little bit smaller.

Not that I use either much; in fact, I hate using the phone full stop :19:

I am old enough to remember when we lived in England and having to book a few weeks in advance of Christmas to make what was then described as a "trunk call" (3 whole minutes!) to her parents in County Mayo.

It is strange how we seem to focus on the downsides because of the news and it takes a bit of thought to realise what we have at our disposal really.

The Internet opened up a whole world to me, both on and offline.

Just for Info

12 percent of all Web sites are porn
25 percent of all search engine requests are for porn
35 percent of all Internet downloads are pornographic
Every second, 28,258 Internet users are viewing porn
89 percent of porn is created in the U.S.
$2.84 billion in revenue was generated from U.S. porn sites in 2006
70 percent of the Internet porn traffic occurs during the nine to five workday
260 new porn sites go online daily

The one that raises the eyebrows (or monobrow for Deano)

70 percent of the Internet porn traffic occurs during the nine to five workday.

I never realised the figure would be so low!

A bit more information to add to Col's statistics (Leinster House is the Irish equivalent of the Houses of Parliament) -

"Almost 400 attempts to access pornographic or explicit websites were made on Oireachtas computers in just 24 days, Independent.ie can reveal.
Data released under Freedom of Information laws show that 970 attempts were made by staff of the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission, Journalists, visitors and contractors to access blocked websites from December 5-29 2016.
The busiest day for attempts to link to pornographic or profane sites was December 21.
On that day there were 44 attempts to link to sites that were considered "pornographic" and five attempts to link to sites blocked for hosting "nudity".
Some attempts were categorised as a bid to connect to sites listed as "extreme", while others were regarded as "profane".
There are no logs available relating to browsers of TDs, senators, their staff or party staff."

I know what you're saying Fear, only this morning I was singing the praises of the facsimile while I was looking for holidays on Ceefax when my pager went off. Fortunately it has a vibrate function as I was also listing to tunes on my minidisk player.
