A-Z Of Football Managers

Sat near to Nigel Clough in the main stand at Millmoor once , watching a reserves game. He had his son with him, who looked almost exactly the same as him. Martin O'Neill also played for, and managed, Norwich City -saw him play.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
P PETER Reid - managed many teams, eg. Manchester City, Sunderland, Leeds U. (briefly), England U-21, etc. As a player, he had long spells at Bolton W., and Everton, and also played for several other clubs. He must have played at Millmoor, but I don't remember seeing him. There was a character in the Viz comic that was loosely based on him!

Q Carlos QUEIROZ - Portuguese nationality, born in Mozambique. Played as a goalkeeper for Ferrovario de Nampula. Managed Real Madrid, assistant manager at Manchester United ( two spells), managed Portugal (two spells), Iran (two spells), South Africa, Columbia, Egypt, Qatar, etc.

R Sir Alf RAMSEY - the only England Manager to have won the World Cup. He also managed Ipswich Town and Birmingham City
From hero to zero. I'll never forget the 1966 World Cup Final. Went out into Masbrough at full-time to calm down before extra-time and it was deserted. No people, no cars, no sound. Spooky. But I'll also never forget the 1970 game against West Germany. Substitutions Paul Warne would have been proud of and a GK display by Bonetti that had elements of farce,

T TOM Johnston - successful Division 2 Millers manager 1958-62. Later managed Grimsby Town, York City and had several spells at Huddersfield Town, as team manager and general manager. I never managed to find out for definite if he ever scored against the Millers as a player (see previous thread on that).

U Derek UFTON - known more for his cricket, he played for Kent as wicket-keeper, but also played football for Charlton Athletic, notching up well over two hundred and fifty appearances at centre-half. In 1964 he became coach to Malcolm Allison at Plymouth going on to be manager a year later leaving three years later. He died in March 2021 at the age of ninety-two and, at the time, was England's oldest living international footballer.

V Aloysius "Louie" VAN GAAL - Dutch footballer who went on to manage some of the top teams in Europe - Ajax, Barcelona (twice), AZ, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, plus three spells as the Netherlands national team manager. Nicknamed "The Iron Tulip".

... or... VIC Buckingham - influential manager at home and in Europe. He managed Bradford P.A., WBA, Sheffield W., and Fulham in England, and Ajax (two spells), Barcelona, Sevilla, Olympiacos, and several other teams abroad. Believed to have been an influence on Johan Cruyff.

Z ZINEDINE ZIDANE - former French footballer whose last club was Real Madrid where he stopped originally as an assistant manager before being their 'B' team manager. In 2016 he became their head coach but left two years later only to return in 2019 retiring in 2021. He has many 'manager facts' including -
Only manager in history to win two consecutive UEFA Champions League trophies in its modern format
Only manager to win three consecutive European Cup/UEFA Champions League finals
Quickest manager in the history of the Top five Leagues to win eight titles with a single club (twenty-three months)
Only person in history to be named French Player of the Year twice and French Manager of the Year twice

But, of course, we best remember him for reacting to a whispered comment from Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup Final when Zidane bent forward and head butted the Italian in the chest leaving him sprawling and the French man sent off.
