A-Z Of Activities

This can be anything that we (though I doubt that would actually be me!) can be active in should we wish.

A AEROBICS - a physical exercise that combines rhythmic exercise with stretching (a bit like me getting out of bed in the morning accompanied by groans!)

B - Bungee jumping involves a person jumping from a great height while connected to a large elastic cord. The launching pad is usually erected on a tall structure such as a building or crane, a bridge across a deep ravine, or on a natural geographic feature such as a cliff. Although on my bucket list I haven't yet tried it.

C CARTWHEEL - circular sideways hansdpring, with arms and legs extended. Don't think that I have attempted one since junior school.

D DEBATING - something I once had to do when I worked at BSC - hated every minute of it. Might quite like it now!

E - Embroidery, many years since I did any!

F FLAG-WAVING - eg at Wembley. Never took a flag in myself, but plenty of other Millers fans did.

G - Gurning. Pulling a grotesque face. There is now a World Gurning Championship held at the Egremont Crab Fair in the Lake District. Not something I've tried although my wife says I have the perfect face for it.

H HIKING - typically vigorous walking on long trail/paths in the countryside, e.g. on the Pennine Way Iin Yorkshire.

I INSTRUMENT playing or collecting - I did play the recorder in Junior school - and can still play 'Go and tell Aunt Nancy' quite badly.

J - Jogging. I am told that this is a form of running at a slow or leisurely pace. The main intention is to increase physical fitness with less stress on the body than from faster running but more than walking. Sounds fun.

K KICKBOXING... or .... KNITTING - never done either!

L - Line - dancing not my idea of fun but a very popular activity

M - Marbles. Very popular in my youth along with conkers. We played various games with them but also coveted unusual ones, collected and traded them.

N NEEDLEWORK - did make a 'sampler' in Junior school but it took me so long. Can't even see to thread a needle these days!

O - Ornithology, bird watching. I love watching the birds in my garden but I would get very fidgety sitting still and quiet in a hide!

P - Pitch and Putt. Golf like game which you can play in a couple of parks round here.

I like playing pitch and putt, but haven't played for a while. Played on the course at Herringthorpe several times, but not recently.

Q QUOITS - we used to play quoits at Brinsworth Junior School. Suitable activity for indoors or outdoors. The target is traditionally a spike, but at school we also had an "archery" type target with different points scoring zones, painted on the school playground tarmac.

I like playing pitch and putt, but haven't played for a while. Played on the course at Herringthorpe several times, but not recently.

Q QUOITS - we used to play quoits at Brinsworth Junior School. Suitable activity for indoors or outdoors. The target is traditionally a spike, but at school we also had an "archery" type target with different points scoring zones, painted on the school playground tarmac.

Quoits was great fun at primary school.

R ROWING - haven't taken part in competitive rowing, but have been on rowing boats in Lake District, Peasholm Park (Scarboro'), etc.

S STAMP COLLECTING - I inherited a stamp book from my big sister and used to get a pack of stamps every week from somewhere up at the Crofts (I think). Can't say it was anything I did with real enthusiasm.
