A review and an idea - VS Charity of the year.

Firstly, for those who didn't read my post on a good morning thread, the last 12 - 15 months have been rough, but although it's a virtual community, we all mostly did our best to help advise, inform and support each other - that's no small achievement.

Sadly, during this last difficult period, we lost two good posters, one who didn't believe that Covid was a big deal and disagreed with the lockdown very early on, and subsequently went off in a huff, and one who believed that I was the devil incarnate and the monster who wanted to end free speech as I followed social media gov guidelines and stopped a conspiracy poster (someone who'd never posted here before, but did so under the guise of a being a Spurs fan) from posting his anti-vax and associated nonsense. I do not regret what I had to do, these people were and had cost lives.

I regret losing both two good contributors, but do not regret trying to post information that was more accurate than not and stopping some of the more dangerous theories from spreading both here and elsewhere.

These things came to mind after I read this recently (I follow him and we converse regularly about the up and coming youth at Tottenham) https://windycoys.com/2021/05/it-was-fun-while-it-lasted/

It reminded me that we also can get pretty passionate here and sadly (yes I've been guilty too lol!) it can even turn a tad personal, but despite our passion generally, we know when a poster has overstepped the mark and we then do our best to calm things down.

We cannot all agree all of the time. Please, let's ALL try and remember that. We're passionate about football and Tottenham in particular, we all want to see our team succeed.

During this rotten season for a bit of fun, we started the predictor thread and I put up a prize, and Walthy picked it up and ran with it brilliantly - for that he has my deep-felt thanks, the same goes for Nick on the player rating thread (no prize for that one, but watch this space). 80 must also be thanked for the prize he sponsored and the shirt that winged it's way to Australia (boy during covid this was an ordeal lol!).

I'm delighted to tell you that the winner; Garyonedaysoon has asked me to donate it to a charity of my choice, I'm also delighted to say the Critical Spurs has also come forward and offered to add to next years prize.

So, before I donate the winnings to a charity, the idea occurred to me that we should (as a community for mutual support) try and decide which charity for the next season we as VS could support - so it's over to you all, please post who your suggestion would be and then I'll do a quick shortlist based on some totally arbitrary criteria and then we can all vote on it!

For the record, I am also going to try and get the site owners to get Gary a winners badge on his profile - just so he can crow a bit.

Once again, congratulations to you for being a real mutual support but like-minded community and having some fun along the way.

Don't forget to make your suggestions for our charity of the year here:

I'm hoping we can have some fun making very small wagers between each other with any proceeds going to our charity of choice - and of course whatever small monetary awards that are made generally!

Ex, from me, myself and moir thanks for what you wrote, hopefully I speak for others also.

Walt did a fantastic job on the "Predictor" thread it was bloody fun taking part and my missus's charity, Serving and Ex-Vets, benefitted from it to the sum of £180.

Nick did another fantastic job on his "Player rating" thread, which unfortunately I did not take part in, but will give it a go next season, it does make thing's interesting, esp the different way each and all of us see and have opinions on each player.

As for a suggested Charity, obviously I am going to be bias lol! and recommend Mrs PY's Charity, or even SAFFA!

Thanks again mate, I really am chuffed that I joined this Community.

One option would be that we contribute to the SPurs Community fund.

Or we could pick 3-5 charities. Each with an entirely different focus so that participants can direct funds to what they are most concerned about.

We would select the charity for each sector based on financial efficiency ratios, ie, most dollars put to direct use.

For my vote...I will put forward supporting a charity that takes care of animals in need. My wife volunteers at the local humane society and honestly I don't know how she does it...a little bit of my soul is ripped away every time I hear the things she deals with. (I could never do it...I would end up in jail for killing someone...seriously)

Probably why I like the motto "Dogs...because People Suck"...and you can substitute any animal in place of Dogs...lol

Kudos to Gary and Critical for their generosity and also to all those on here who support this thread. Love this place!

There are thousands upon thousands of worthy charities, Ex, most I've probably never even heard of. I'm fine with what the majority decide upon and will donate whenever a link is posted to do so.

Fair play to you Gary, for the donation. The thought had crosseed my mind too when I was killing it back in November, but alas, a mysterious finger injury and the painstaking rehab back from that truly scuppered my chances!

As we don't have too many suggestions, I'll put forward another one:

The Rabbit Residence based in Hertfordshire.

As the name would suggest they are a rabbit rescue looking to rehome as many of the rabbits as possible.

Before we moved last year my wife volunteered there for over 20 years and can vouch for them as a worthy charity. They are largely staffed by volunteers.

Like USA's wife, my wife has some real horror stories of cruelty and maltreatment of these animals. It beggars belief the nature of some humans.

The rescue is always over capacity - usually 100+ rabbits. The staff are heroes. It's also outside work and they are out there 365 days a year in whatever weather conditions.

The rescue is always desperate and grateful for any funds/donations.

Ok, you are the reigning champion, so more weight goes to your answer and plus it is the first time I have ever heard of a rabbit charity - and it tickles me for more reasons than I can tell lol! (Yes, I really am childish at heart). My daughter had a dwarf rabbit called 'bob' that was more like a dog with her, incredible what she trained it to do, and it sustained and comforted her all through my wife's illness.

So our Charity of the year for 21/22 will be The Rabbit Residence in Hertfordshire; I'll search for them and hopefully they have a cash donation method we can use.

Thanks Ex.

I'm a dog person really but what I've learnt over the years (mainly though my wife) is that all animals deserve our respect. And they all have their own characteristics and personalities.

The charity will be very appreciative I'm sure.

Gary, I had heard of that Rabbit Residence Charity round your way, good on your missus also.

There are quite a few small charities round these parts, "Cats rescue", "Rabbits for Life" and even "Hedgehogs here we are" just to name 3.
There are of course all the big known ones, which to be brutally honest, Mrs PY and myself do not have any truck with.

No Crittur deserves what some prick humans do to them.

Thanks Ex.

My wife is contacting Lea Facey who manages the rescue to make sure she knows it's from Vital Spurs. Maybe we can get a Spurs flag hoisted outside the rescue in return!

On a purely selfish note, I'm hoping for a little payback myself. My wife absolutely hates football and has long given up trying to understand my obsession (her words) with Spurs. But she was genuinely taken back by the donation. So hopefully she'll view Spurs in a different light from here on.

Id like to put forward either Abigails Footsteps who are a baby loss charity providing support and counselling for bereaved parents and families as well as specialist bereavement training for midwives and healthcare professionals.

Or Variety the Childrens Charity. the Children’s Charity, supports children and young people throughout the UK who are sick, disabled or disadvantaged

Hi Rackny,

so sorry, the donation has been made and the charity is chosen (see my post above).

But win next season and you can choose whoever you like!

Well those brownie points didn't last long.

I've just been outside mowing the lawn and sent a stone straight through the wife's rear car windscreen. Smashed it to smithereens. And they can't get someone out to replace it until June 1.
