Coronavirus

Yup. The now famous "R" rate is still between 0.7 and 0.9 so that hasn't changed for a couple of weeks now , so not sure why some of the restrictions have been lifted.
Seems obvious to most of us it will go up again, and once the PL starts up that's it free for all. If footballers can play we can do what we like will be the signal

There's probably regions in this country where the R is equal to or even greater than 1 and obviously it's not a big country and very easy to get around and spread.

There will almost certainly be a second wave shortly.

Yes, similar article on the BBC with the claim the decision is political not scientific.

Johnson and his chronies, plus the nodding dogs, are going to kill yet more people.

Scientific advisers to the government have warned of the risk of lifting the lockdown in England, as sunshine marks the final weekend before rules change.

Professor John Edmunds said it was a "political decision" to ease measures; Sir Jeremy Farrar said the NHS test and trace system should be "fully working".

It appears the truth is - i.e. information not coming from Downing Street, that track and trace won't be fully operational until the end of June and there was one track and tracer interviewed on newsnight last night saying he'd just been paid £400 for doing nothing, because the system isn't ready.

What bugs me is the absolute silence and lack of leadership shown when its obvious that many people are not adhering to the guidelines.

What bugs me is the lack of explanation as to how our death rate is so high.

This country is rudderless.

What is in increasingly bugging me is seeing and hearing people who are treating lockdown and being on furlough as some sort of extended summer holiday and pontificate about how lockdown is so unfair and needs loosening conveniently forgetting nearly 40,000 have died and they should be actually working!. Show some dignity please. Or get back to work. I know quite a few who are taking the piss on furlough now. I have been genuinely shocked that some people I have known for years and are not stupid people have a taking the piss attitude to this not working now.

And another fing. While I am at it.

Schools. Not impressed. My two are happy at their school. Myself and Mrs M are generally happy with the school . They have a consistantly good Ofsted rating .

But we have been increasingly frustrated with the now lack of direction. I am sympathetic with the situation that schools have suddenly found themselves in but its wearing thin. 10 weeks on we have no idea when they are going back. There has been no online lessons and I am aware that other schools are and have been doing online lessons increasingly. Of course goes without saying that all private schools have been online , full days since the get go. Of course disproportionate again with the haves and have not in our society. I feel like my 2 are being left to rot by this government . Looking after their own again.

I am seriously questioning what the teachers are doing now I'm afraid. Junior 1 has had nothing in terms of planning for uni applications which need to be in full swing by now . There has been no lateral or creative thinking from their school interms of getting maybe one year group in for even one day a week. That will be something. Their school cannot ge alone in this. There seems to be an acceptance from teachers, government and now parents that this school year will now drift. Not good enough. My neighbours have a year 1 pupil and he can go back next week but they have decided not to send him in. Since when has this been a choice ffs ?.
Again no leadership. No direction from the Government.

The rudderless government are letting year 1 and 6 go back. Why?. Year 6 are done, sats non existent and will normally cruise this term. Year 1. Sorry they do not need to be first back with another 10 years to make up their lost time. What the hell is going on . Why cannot young adults who can socially distance unlike snotty nosed 5 year olds be in school ?. Ffs they are all out in the parks socialising and getting high on nitrous oxide now lockdown is over. There seems to be an acceptance that schools will drift along as it's now near the summer. Well the common peoples schools anyway. Obviously the future MP's are well looked after.

Get a fcuking grip Government and sorry teachers get a grip aswell.

I understand your frustration Melon, wanted to try and put your mind at rest as someone who has done a uni application for September, albeit as a 'mature' student on a postgrad course!

Universities themselves are in a huge bind, and are being pulled from pillar to post thanks to the wishy-washy advice from the government. Some of them have thousands of people spread across multiple campuses, coming in from all over the world to plan for, and not just the education aspect, but the accommodation side as well. They're having to plan for everything from a full return to normal in September to the possibility of an all-virtual academic year, and everything in between.

The point of that little ramble being, they themselves can't plan in the way they usually would like to either, so don't worry too much at this stage.

The best advice I could give to you both if he wants to start planning ahead would be to look at the UCAS undergraduate website extremely closely. That will contain everything he needs to know about both the normal process and the disruption. The UCAS form itself is relatively straightforward, and the pandemic may only really affect the predicted/actual grades part. The thing people tend to need most help with is the personal statement, but there will be information on that too so that he can begin to get ahead now and hit the ground running when he has one-to-one teacher time again.
