I can only think that there is some extremely dubious bonus situation going on, as in we have to pay his former club a load of money if he plays X number of games or scores X number of goals

I don't understand why people have a problem with these sorts of deals. A staggered payment where the buyer pays more if the player is successful seems common sense to me. Yes, it creates situations where there is a disincentive to playing people but only if you are also happy to reduce your chances of winning.

Anyway, Vellios 23 league games, 12 starts, 26 total appearances, 13 starts, 6 goals (all league). No immediately obvious threshold there.
