The topic of the latest Vital Pompey poll (to your right) is '<b>best midfield pairing?</b>'
Options given are:
Racon & Ertl
Ertl & Ferry
Ferry & Racon
Other
Currently, and by some margin, <b><font color='#0E4FB0'>Simon Ferry</font></b> and <b><font color='#0E4FB0'>Therry Racon</font></b> are the preferred option...
I must admit that they, for me, are the pair that I believe are our most creative central pair (well <b><font color='#0E4FB0'>Jed Wallace</font></b> aside, but he is rarely being used as a central figure, probably due to his lack of experience and physical presence?)
The problem is that probably does leave us a little light in a physical sense, that being said Ferry is not afraid to put his boot in is he, then again nor is Racon!
<b><font color='#0E4FB0'>Johnny Ertl</font></b> just has not managed to reach the heights that he did last season, but I think I can see the merits of a player of his type in the side...
I cannot say that I have been overly impressed with him but perhaps it is some of the things that we are not really noticing that Ertl does that we could miss if he was not playing?
We have only seen fleeting glimpses of him, but I have been pretty impressed with <b><font color='#0E4FB0'>Gavin Mahon</font></b> and feel you can see that he is, or at least was, a pretty good higher league standard footballer.
He has that midfield presence (you would mess with him would you!) but unlike Ertl looks as though he has a bit more ability to play the ball around and do something with it. Definitely an Ertl like player but with more technical ability I would say.
It would be interesting to see what he did given a go alongside someone?
All of this being said I think that we need to be playing five across the midfield, from that five two genuine wingers and someone off <b><font color='#0E4FB0'>Patrick Agyemang</font></b>.
The Agyemang and <b><font color='#0E4FB0'>John Marquis</font></b> pairing just does not seem to be doing it...
I thought it worked pretty well back along when we had Wallace, <b><font color='#0E4FB0'>Ricky Holmes</font></b> and <b><font color='#0E4FB0'>Andy Barcham</font></b> all in the side with one of them playing off Agyemang and the other two as wide players, with them interchanging.
Would that trio and Ferry and Racon leave us too physically light in midfield though?
Maybe so, in which case perhaps the 'other' option could well be worth exploring with Mahon given a go alongside either Ferry or Racon?
Its not an easy life for <b><font color='#0E4FB0'>Guy Whittingham</font></b> is it, and is easy for us to manage from the sidelines but the good thing is that he does have options these days!
Finding the right combination is what he is still searching for though and perhaps is struggling a little too much to work out...
PLAY UP POMPEY!
