There was story (in one of the papers) a couple of months ago about Steph from BBC breakfast not being popular with southern viewers , because of her "common" Middlesbrough accent

I suppose it's not the 'done thing' on the Beeb! Although if that lad who used to be on Blue Peter can get on then anyone can!
