"It is very easy to forget that Lincoln City sat 4th in the National League at the halfway point of last season. Their downward momentum from that exact point was breathtaking: only relegated sides Altrincham and Welling picked up fewer points over the second half of the season, and City picked up just 6 points from their last 10 games, the worst in the league. On that basis, they would appear prime candidates for relegation this time around, but things have changed dramatically at Sincil Bank. Lincoln have used the infusion of sustainable investment from South African director Clive Nates to secure the appointment of the much-admired management team of Danny and Nicky Cowley from Braintree Town. Add some very impressive close season signatures to that mix, and you have a Lincoln City that will present a very different proposition to the side that limped desperately to the end of last season. The trio of players signed from Cowley's former club Braintree will provide a new engine room for the side, whilst promising young striker Jonny Margetts will be keen to show Tranmere they were wrong to release him in the summer. Perennial promotion winner Nathan Arnold has joined from Grimsby, whilst striker Adam Marriott will be desperate to regain the form that made him Cambridge City's record goalscorer a couple of years ago. Manager Cowley has set his sights on a top ten finish, and is relishing the chance to apply his skills and methodology to a professional environment. But with the facilities and budget he now has at his disposal, he must surely be looking at a promotion challenge at the first time of asking.

Prediction: If he can do it with Braintree, he can certainly do it with Lincoln. Play-offs with a title challenge as an outside bet."

"For some reason, the bookies appear to fancy Eastleigh for the title this year. For the level of investment poured into this tiny club from Southampton Airport, last season's failure to reach the play-offs as a minimum will have come as a huge disappointment. Manager Richard Hill was replaced in early season by rookie Chris Todd, but he was unable to influence matters as the Spitfires could only finish seventh. There has been a fair turnover of players this summer, with some big name players departing the Silverlake: much of the spine of the side has gone, with goalkeeper Michael Poke, defender Jamie Turley, talented midfielder Josh Payne, and experienced strikers Lee Cook and Jack Midson all heading for the Hampshire hills and beyond. The signing of young French-born striker Mikael Mandron from Sunderland looks very interesting indeed, but there is no obvious reason to suggest Eastleigh are ready for a title challenge this season.

Prediction: Status quo with a play-off challenge at best."
