It's all a bit of a conundrum. On the one hand they collectively look haunted, gaunt and fearful, none more so than Jos Buttler. I'm sure some of them are taking the pitch expecting and waiting to fail again personally and as a team. But then despite the way they look, they don't seem to be hurting enough for me when things do go wrong with the bat, ball or in the field.
Bringing Stokes back because he wanted to play- although only for this tounament- was a big mistake and set a poor tone and example.
It showed contempt for the rest, particularly the younger lads trying to make their way and even got to Joe in the end as he played his ramp shot and got out ( although, those who said it was careless/reckless and symptomatic of the squad's approach should watch again as the bowler deserves a lot of credit. At that pace-slower than the others Joe normally puts over the boundary- he had time to adjust and altered his line spearing it in at Joe's legs to get him out for the 1st time to that shot.)
I think they thought they'd only to turn up to progress and , after a couple of defeats, the malaise had set in, it was hard to turn the ship round and, from many rumours, it seems that Buttler split the dressing room with his own lack of application, baffling leadership and sloppy standards.
In interview etc he's hardly dynamic, enthused or gung ho- in fact he seems to have little, if any, get up and go and that, translated into leading and directing a squad does not play well.
As many will know, I've never been a big fan of Buttler's - whilst some see him as a match winner and wonderkid- and I looked at his stats yesterday compared to Joe's and I know who I'd want in my team - and they show the real truth.
Buttler 177 matches 4934 runs Avge 39.79
Joe 170 games 6462 runs Avge 47.51. Joe also has 27 wickets- which could well be less than chances Buttler has missed!
So, in more games, he's scored 1500 odd less runs than Joe - and yet he's seen as the one day specialist the ultimate ODI player and revered for it.
He also wants to stay on as captain!
He concedes he was "very frustrated" with his own form and hopes to "lead from the front" by making more runs going forward | ESPN.co.uk
