Good Morning Thread

When we lived in Walthamstow , as a lad growing up , our doctor was a great bloke . Used to sit in his front room and wait your turn , sometimes , if you went to see him on a Monday , the queue might stretch to standing in the road , outside his front door .
We all made some good friends standing there or sitting down .

When my Mum went in to see him , he would always open up the drawer on the side of the his desk , get a whiskey bottle out and pour each of them a wee dram , as he called it .
He was a family “friend” in a lot of ways .

He knew me from birth , I was born in the front bedroom of our house , with the help of a midwife , Nurse Brimley ,
I will never forget her , another family “friend” who was constantly on call, and arrived on a push bike at the critical hour , and liaised with the doctor .
She brought all the family into the world , my sister and all my “ cousins “ , knew us all and would call out as she cycled past if we were playing in the road .

Our doctor always called you by your first name , was always interested in how you felt , always had time to listen , and most importantly , always checked your history .

Once his evening surgery was done , he would go off on his home visits,
He also had home visits in the morning as well.

I can remember him coming to see me when I had German Measles and was feeling awful .
Sometimes he would call in the morning and in the evening , depending on how ill you were .

Can you imagine that now .
Absolutely spot on Walt......always remember this happening in East London when i was a toddler and growing up......the doc new all the family and more important;ly all our history! He diagnosed my older brother when he was seven with Meningitis and caught it so early that he survived.... and despite the after-effects which could include hearing loss, seizures, limb weakness, difficulties with vision, speech, language, memory, and communication, as well as scarring and limb amputations after sepsis., he had none of those asnd went on to be a professor and specialist of a branch of Geology called Palynology (Study of fossil spores)...vital in hot countries to know where to drill for WATER! mind you he could be an east end nutter at times in his skin head days, rest his soul!

I'm much with you Stevie here, the Bus is free at 60 (should be 65) and indeed prescriptions are also free, (again should be over 65), however the 'Government' if that's, what they are here, say it would cost as much to manage the payment method, who's free who isn't and it would end up costing more in admin, so not worth it (aparrently) 🙄
BTW I haven't got a free bus /train pass...
The age aspect isn't difficult Niall, your date of birth/age is indicated on prescriptions so the pharmacist can easily determine if say you are over 65 and don't have to pay. I think my pay/no pay status is now pre-determined by my surgery and noted on the prescription so the pharmacist doesn't even have to work it out.

The NHS is on it's knees for a number of reasons: (and as a trustee of an NHS area for some years, I promise you, I know what I'm talking about):

1. Go here, read this: https://www.migrationwatchuk.org/migration-statistics-over-time
2. 80% 0f Migrants when granted leave to stay/visa bring in their economically inactive elderly parents/uncles/aunts/children etc and this group have some very expensive and intensive health issues to deal with. They get access to it all for free.
3. You couldn't plan for what Covid did to the NHS, but it will take 10-15 years to fix - no matter how much money we keep chucking at it -!
4. Bad planning - there was and is a total disconnect between demands for modernisation and the demand for the NHS to take on and 'fix' all conditions. Labour spent Billions on it's Digitisation program and it didn't meet any of it's goals and was so bad that the subsequent Lib/conservative government demanded billions back, and got a fair chunk of it - this 'programme' left the NHS in complete disarray - at the time, it was estimated it would take 15-20 years to 'fix'. Add that to the vast increases in GP salaries and pensions granted by labour, means it left an unaffordable pension bill of Doctors, that was a 5-10 fold increase in long term costs - GP's can now on average earn £150-250k p.a. but the pension liability to the public purse is immense - it is now not unusual to see Doctors retiring with a £1.5-2 mill public pension 'pot'....utter madness!
5. The huge cost increases from Pharma and the huge costs of new ways to deal with fast-growing conditions like cancer.

I could go on, but I won't, as in the end what people won't understand is that Labour's largesse destroyed much of the NHS and will continue to do so for decades as it saddled regional NHS with bills that they had no intention or idea how to fund..
Covid has ruined it. It'll probably take even longer than the suggested time frame before we notice any meaningful improvement.

It'll have to be restructured again but at what cost?

I'm all for helping the elderly but we're all living a lot longer & these perks will need to be reigned in somewhat. If you're under 18 or over 65 you should receive free prescriptions, everybody else should pay.

I salute your grandfather and all the doctors of his ilk .

I was allocated a GP , as they are called now , when we moved to where we are now , ten years ago , …. She has moved on now ….. I never ever saw her , haven't a clue what she looks like , sounds like or how she practiced .

I had to put her name down on all Health Insurance documents though .

More importantly , she didn’t ever meet me or know me . I was always seen by somebody else , anyone that was free at the time .
Ten years ago there were five GPs in our practice , there are three now . The head honcho comes to work in a track suit and trainers , never reads about your history and delights in asking what you expect from your consultation today , and whether you need a chaperone!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a good relationship with the nurse at my local practice. I see her more often than i ever see my GP. She's a cheery soul who clearly enjoys her work.

The last time i spoke to my doc was via a video link. To make an actual appointment in person is nigh on impossible nowadays.

Only 3 of em interest me TQ, can you guess em? Lol!
You're still an old dinosaur PY but we love you anyway. Spurs is Spurs to me whether that be our senior mens side , our womens side, or our academy teams. Our women are one game from walking out at Wembley in an FA Cup final, that's pretty damn exciting to me considering how long the club have waited for a trophy.

Sorry for being a Dino' TQ, LOL! but like many others of my species I hate Womens Football, though some do love it, not for me am afraid, as for Golf hit a bloody ball 300+ yards to put it in a hole, nah! again not for me! but must admit it is a very skillful game.

I do try to watch the football of our younger nippers on SpursPlay whenever I can.

Mind this old Dino' does watch Ladies Rugby n Netball.

Talking Rugby, will be watching, your lot, Quinns n Northampton, either live or recorded.

I'm by no means defending Iran, but what did you expect was going to happen when they bomb the consulate of an other (rogue) country? The lack of de escalation tactics for months and years now is going to inevitably kick off global war. What is worrying for me is that there doesn't seem to be any country with global power that is being serious about actually encouraging calm, its just layers of chaos being added to chaos that has been ongoing for centuries
