Climate Crisis (n/G)

Can you summarise the key point. I skimmed it and basically extinction isn't the worst thing as the state of the world if we survived would be unbearable ?

I think that could be true. The super rich would live within the gated sanctuaries and the poor would struggle with rising sea levels, reduced access to drinking water and scarcer resources.

I've always believed future conflicts would be driven by access to fresh water or even land that won't be below sea level.

Not a great prospect. Wouldn't be surprised if nature tried to cull the dominant species to balance the world a bit

Interesting article here that suggests (explains why?) extinction isn't the worst thing that can happen....

https://novaramedia.com/2021/06/24/extinction-isnt-the-worst-that-can-happen/
Please can you help me out....

What was the "number" or "threshold" that turned "Climate Change" into a "Climate Crisis....
...and upon what day or days was that threshold crossed ?

Also, please can you remind me....
Why was Global Warming changed to "Climate Change" ?

And
What is the evidence that warming is man-made and not natural ?
(e.g. some combination of part of the Milankovitch and solar cycles )

And if you mention "increase in CO2 in the atmosphere during the late 20th Century", I will reply by asking / stating:
a) Are you sure that CO2 followed the (very small) rise in global temperature - or did it lead it ?
b) Correlation does not prove causation.
c) Hasn't earth had higher concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere ?
d) Plants thrive in CO2 rich environments ?
e) Would you agree that a drop in global average temperatures could be harmful to humans (more deaths in winters) - and reduce crop yields ?

Thank you

To you no doubt the whole thing is a mystery. Climate Change is causing Global warming and a Climate emergency. It is a emergency because unless we act quicky there will be no planet for our Grandchildren. A Grandchild happens when a Mummy and Daddy get very friendly with each other .They are sometimes so friendly they have a baby that Baby grows and one Day becomes a Mummy or Daddy themselves.Basically the way we are looking after the planet one day there will be no more Mummy's or Daddy's and no more babies. But I will ask your teacher to explain that more fully it must be past your bedtime.

Chris, you're spot on that there is a climate emergency happening.

But the article I've linked suggests that it:s not gonna be a case of humans destroying the planet, or even causing their own extinction. It's suggests that it's gonna be worse than that, and that actually it already is.

Read the article if you get a few minutes. If not, just read the last couple of paragraph, which are here;

"This is why extinction isn’t the worst that can happen. It’s much more likely that climate chaos will intensify existing processes than bring about the end times. Instead of the final collapse, we should fear a world of unfathomable suffering. Of crop failures, of food shortages, of prisoners press-ganged into putting out fires, of those same prisoners dying in their cells from insufferable heat, of flooded cities, of billions of climate refugees, of gated private city-states, and eco-apartheid-preserving borders that ensure the survival of those in the worst affected regions hinges on securing super-exploited employment in protected enclaves.

"This might sound like science fiction. But as those suffering the catastrophic convergence of capital, colonialism and ecological crisis today will testify, it’s already happening. Rather than talking about 'socialism or extinction', 'ruin or revolution' might better reflect our choice. After all, we can live in the ruins, though we’d surely prefer not to. Some of us, tragically, already do.'"

Actually sounds a little like Revelations. I have had a very long day visiting Kent for a funeral of a parent of a very close friend .My day started yesterday afternoon. I will read it in the morning or afternoon. Goodnight folks.

Ah, Novara Media again. Won't waste my time...

You just did!

The article is written by a an academic who teaches politics at the University of Manchester. And he appears to have referenced the different claims he makes (admittedly, i haven't checked those).

Btw, I don't agree with everything I read on novaro. And the opening argument in the article is actually counter to what I've argued, on here and elsewhere in recent times; that the climate situation means that capitalism must be abolished not in order to avoid extinction but to minimise the suffering of humanity, because we WILL survive but the world will be in ruins.

Instead if just dismissing it, have a read and engage. Tell us what about it you find to be biased or loony left or whatever.

Or don't, I'm not bothered.

Revelations, now there's something not to read late at night after a few smokes!

Night mate.

My first thought with this post , is you're being sarcastic.
Demonstrating that you are not 'impaired' in any way , if you can project such thinking.

On reading it again , I still think the same , but it reads a bit creepy.

I watched Andrew Neil interview Roger Hallam last night and must say that Hallam came across as totally bonkers.
Nobody can deny climate change but this guy and his movement are not going to win the argument.

Translation.
You have no answer or explanation for 'climate change' - or how / why this became a "climate emergency".

Is CC your new religion ?

I hope I live long enough to see a new generation laugh (hopefully not cry) at CC idiocy.

I doubt it, Tarian, I'd love to but I just don't fancy my chances.

Maybe some other kind soul might help you. If not, the best I can offer is to suggest that you just don't worry about it.

I've finally clicked the ignore button on a user, because he literally offers nothing.

At least the trolls can occasionally be funny.

Haven't read the article, but is the gist a "would you rather" question about whether you'd prefer to survive the apocalypse or die in it?

I've always thought that about shows like the Walking Dead (before it got terrible), surely you'd rather be one of the first to cop it than have to survive in that hopeless hellscape?

Bloody hell MM !
I know Buddha can be a bit long winded and overly abusive at times, but that's not really a reason to ignore his posts.
About 1 in 10 is actually interesting :grinning:

,☹️ I assumed he was referring to Tarian. I was going to thank him for following the correct process of announcing to the board that you have blocked someone.
