Grimsby Town (h): What 3 Things Did We Learn?

We are not playing that well and difficult to give positives in terms of Akinde and McCartan.
Bolger did well in terms of heading and passing however done twice down our right for pace.
Toffolo had a good game today. Just pipped Micky for man of the match.

1. In the space of a few hours last Thursday this already pretty good squad has been improved. If you consider the bench today and with due respect to Gordon who's done a decent job for us when asked those on there today could all come on and do a very good job for us. When you also factor in the two suspended players this squad is very impressive. The introduction of Rowe late on shows that options abound now.

2. We are not going to smash every team in this division and at this stage of the season it's more about grinding out results against resilient opponents. Grimsby were largely toothless up front but organised and not easy to break down. More of a dour win but after the dramatics of last week at Swindon this is the kind of result that wins promotions.

3. We are now on 55 points. On average if you get to 85 points in this division you finish top 3. So in essence we are 10 wins out of 19 games away from League One football next season. Bring it on

1. Akinde does the job asked of him and does it very well, handful for the defence even if he wasn't on top of his game.
2. McCartan flits in and out of games, that unpredictability is a key asset. He started well, we controlled the early part of the game and scored. He then faded, we lost control, Grimsby had their best spell. Second half was better, more involved again and Grimsby ineffective. Rowe then arrived to exploit spaces created by tired legs created by McCartan and Akinde.
3. Overall, a functional win, weren't great but you could see how the underlying Cowley Method is designed to deal with that.
