Alert Team
I'm currently out of the country so couldn't watch. You will all have to fill me in.

Other than Son it was a good team performance.

Sess had a terrific game.

Royal, probably his best game for us.

Bent and Dier were solid.

I think I'd have to go with Kulu as well. He's levelled up Royal.

Easy choice: Kulu.

He was instrumental in just about every decent attacking move we made. Quite why was withdrawn when Kane and Son were left on, I don't know. But then I do know really.

The back 3 were very good defensively notwithstanding Romero's crazy free kcik near the end.

Bentancur was easily the pick of the midfield two. I'd like to think he was withdrawn before PEH because of his booking but suspect not.

Great to see Sess on the scoresheet. This is the area I want to see him kick on. We know he has goalscoring capability.

On the other side Royal had a much better second half once the space opened up for him. But it was very poor defending from him for their first goal. In a tight space like that he was beaten far too easily. It's recurring weakness with him and one I was hoping the backroom would be working with him on during the summer.

Son was out of sorts most of the afternoon. Kane was largely ineffective. It's a shame Richarlison wasn't on the bench. Those are the sort games I'd like to see Kane or Son substituted - when they're having very little impact on the match. It will probably happen with Son. I'm not convinced we'll see it with Kane.

Overall a great result and start to the season. And even better that we weren't reliant on Kane and/or Son to deliver the goals.

Kulu.

As for Son, after the Korea pre-season, he's been in doldrums. Just buzzes around like a bee without stinging. Kane is unlikely to be subbed unless we sign a.n.other that can see and execute passes like he can. Yeah, had Rich been on the bench Son may have raised his game. Let's see what reaction we get in the next one.

Just watched the full replay on Sky GotD, gotta say Bentacur gets my vote for MotM, the amount of work he gets through is extraordinary and he seems to do it with so much ease. I'm going to score both him and Kulusevski an 8.0 though.
What's Sky GotD, TQ? Sky Go?

I agree with your assessment of Benta. The engine room is often full of unsung heroes since they are not doing the glamour stuff. They get noticed if they are constantly intercepting opposition onsloughts or regularly making incisive passes.

But really the whole team dynamic is a lot different under Conte. That ponderous build up seems to be history (thank fk) and the defenders are often advancing in to the final 3rd even being in the opposition box. Benta provides that essential cover (more than PEH) and yet triggers many attacks. He also comes across as a quiet unassuming figure.

What a game, great play from everyone, but a bit mmmm! where Son was concerned, should really have had a hattrick.
My MOM's...

1 KULU
2 Bentacure
3 Sessegnon.
