Not a huge number of promotion drives in that time frame!
How about 68-69 season under Ron Gray when we were in contention for first time in a long while, but fell away, finishing 8th. I remember seeing us beat Workington 4-1 late in the season, my first Imps win. By then 'we werent going up' so the crucial loss the headline alludes to will have been earlier.
I'll plump for the 5-0 loss at Swansea at end of March 69 which might well have been when our 'drive' conked out.
That's a lot of waffle for another probably wrong answer!

Went to three out of the four defeats that season. Can remember northants, was at Newport opening day. Can’t remember the other one I went to? But I think we lost at Tranmere on a Friday?

Away defeat at Tranmere was in February. Only other defeat was at Brentford in mid-March - so not the 1975/76 season!

Wasn’t 76/77 as an outsider? Didn’t we finish 7th or so? Can remember a couple of young stiffs being given a run as the season was deemed over.

I personally felt we'd blown it after losing 1-0 at Swindon two games before, but of course it went right to that last game of the season.

81/82 was the first season when I went to most of the games (and first as a grown up...although still not sure that status has been reached yet!)
