Your Top 5 Villa Managers

Vital Football Legend
Pretty simple, rank your top 5 Villa managers over your lifetime.

For me:

1) Big Ron - he's the first Villa manager I remember and my absolute favourite. What a character and a great manager too.

2) MON - turned a powderpuff side under DOL into lions. Nobody came to Villa Park expecting an easy win when MON was around. As soon as he left, we turned right back into mush.

3) John Gregory - We had a great pop at the league under JG. Another big character who bleeds claret and blue.

4) Brian Little - Mr Aston Villa and a true gentleman according to all reports. A great League Cup win over Leeds too.

5) Steve Bruce - this probably says more about the poor managers we've had over the past 29 years. Bruce has put together a very solid squad out of a real mess. He's put the club back on the front foot which was no easy task.

Here goes mine;

1) Sir Ron Saunders - no explanation needed

2) Big Ron - rarely a dull moment and some great times

3) Vic Crowe - Began laying the foundations after the debacle of the 60's. Still have fantastic memories of those 3rd division days!

4) Brian Little - Well he walks on water doesn't he? A gent and a true "villain".

5) MON - I don't think any manager has raised the expectation levels so high so quickly in my time, alas it wasn't to last.

Lord Ron - I often wonder how many more trophies we would have won had he stayed

Criminal mate especially when you see Dougys name on a stand and not Sir Ron's

Ron Saunders.

Ron Atkinson.

Graham Taylor ( First Time )

Brian Little.

John Gregory.

I won't add the overrated, Irish Leprechaun because I haven't forgotten how he walked out on the club, with his 1970's coaching manuals under his arm - just 5 days before the season started.

Little shyte he is.

Same reason I never put the little runt in.

Ron Atkinson
Brian Little
Graham Taylor (1st edition)
John Gregory
Martin O'Neil (who I hate to include as in hindsight the negatives associated with his reign far outweigh the positives but the post did say 'in your lifetime' ruling out Saunders for me)

1. Ron Atkinson
2. Graham Taylor MK1
3. Brian Little
4. MON
5. John Gregory

If Bruce gets us promoted he'd be in with a shout of nudging JG out of 5th place.

Posted the same sentiment on another thread two weeks back gator. Every time I walk up Witton Lane I want to spit.

Why no Ron Saunders MTG ?

Was never 100% a fan (I've got me coat and am out the door), in spite of his achievements, and he did walk out (there may have been reasons, but were they strong enough?). The five I chose I rated more; e.g. Eric got us our last FA Cup, in spite of very little support from the board. If there was room for a 6th I'd have stuck in Vic Crowe or John Gregory.

I didn't think it was fair to include managers I'd never see in action. Obviously, Ron Saunders was our best manager in modern times but I don't remember any of it.
