The FA rule change that helps Jack Clarke and Harvey White get into Mourinho's Tottenham plans
The FA have made a change to the rules for substitutes ahead of the third round match between Tottenham Hotspur and Marine

Tottenham Hotspur's younger players such as Harvey White and Jack Clarke could be helped in their quest for game time by a change to the FA's ruling on substitutes.

The FA has issued an update to the FA Cup rule handbook ahead of the third round fixtures this weekend, which means it will come into force for Spurs' trip to non-league side Marine.

"Most notable is that clubs are now able to name a maximum of nine substitutes of which five may be used," said the FA in their update.

"Teams are permitted a maximum of three opportunities (excluding half-time) to make substitutions during normal time, and with the ability to carry over any unused substitutes and make a further substitution should the tie progress to extra time."

That gives Jose Mourinho far more options on the bench for the trip on Sunday to a team playing in the eighth tier of English football.

He not only can name an extra two substitutes on the bench, bringing it into line with the Premier League and Carabao Cup, but by having the ability to bring on five fresh players during the game he can give younger players a chance with big players ready in reserve.

That should benefit the likes of Jack Clarke and Harvey White this weekend and in any other favourable draws Spurs might get.

Both players have featured during the clubs Europa League run and White was an unused substitute on the bench on Tuesday night in Spurs' Carabao Cup semi-final victory against Brentford.

Should Harry Kane be given a rest (don't hold your breath!) then the Tottenham boss could even decide to give 16-year-old academy striker Dane Scarlett another chance on the bench, following his cameo in the Europa League earlier in the season.

So disappointed here. When I saw the headline I thought it meant that additional subs had to be homegrown or academy trained. We saw against Brentford that White scraped the last subs spot based on 5 or 6 injuries to the main squad. It wasn't because he was young and homegrown at all.

When will the FA start driving the homegrown agenda?
