You'll never beat Des Walker

Lineker made his 1 to 11 yesterday and 3 of his back four were former Reds: Anderson, Walker and Pearce. Oh and his keeper was Shilton.

Lineker said Des couldn'y pass a ball beyond 10m but his tackling and positioning was second none. He hated the "never beat Des Walker" chant because he never got a sniff when up against him.

It feels great having a rational debate as to whether or not a Forest player justified to be considered the best, second or third best in their position in the world as opposed to the obligatory (and often justified), "his masterbate".

Back then you knew we were set up to be able to defend and counter-attack.

When the opposition came forward you weren’t shitting yourself wondering how we were going to concede, you were anticipating when we would win the ball back and whether we would score. Happy days...

Do you think it would have been fair to say that there was a point where he was probably the best CB in the world after Baresi?

I was a bit young then, so didn't pay as much attention to defenders!

Im biased but it was always us second to the italians baresi and maldini (occasionally koeman from the Netherlands) but imo we had the best two defenders in world in dw and sp.

You to imagine premiership winning captain wes morgan was labelled as shit mainly because he wasnt as good as des. Probably was one or two deluded souls who thought wes was actually shit.

Not been like that for many decades now sadly. Remember a friendly in south America where the whole england back four came from forest.

Its what we want to see sabz get right.

Just watched the 7-0 win over Chelsea on ifollow. I think it's on YouTube too, all 90 minutes.

Des Walker is majestic. Once Forest are 4 or 5 up the crowd want him to score, and he makes a couple of superb runs from his own half. One of them sees him scythed down just outside the box, with the free kick tapped sideways for Pearce to score.

Chelsea had Dorigo and Townsend, Beasant in goal, Dixon and Durie up front, so no mugs. Both sides played good football and got on with the game with very few fouls or fuss.

Fascinating to watch these games almost 30 years on. The West Ham semi (a few days earlier) showed a young Ian Woan right on his game - he looks more hesitant here. Lee Glover has neat touches but isn't quite strong enough. Parker is excellent in midfield, and Roy Keane is already emerging as a top player. Crosby and Charles look great on the right, both with good long throws. Not a big side, but one of the best footballing sides to wear the Garibaldi.

I actually thought that Des was very neat in possession, but yes, he was never pinging diagonal crossfield balls like someone like Dawson.

It was a great era, you actually went to games expecting to win and was mightily shocked when we didn’t.
Fortunately that didn’t happen very often.
